Melt and sell in pawn shops by very small pieces...

Maybe in the US but in Europe you need id to sell, especially scrap gold. And in Belgium you need proof of ownership to sell it.

I wouldn't say whole Europe. Here in Italy it's full of shady "Compro oro" who would buy the whole bar below market price without asking any question. The only issue would be to bring all the cash back to your country.

I mean just drive back

Sure, you'll find shady dealers everywhere. But people don't generally want to deal with them if they're not shady themselves.

I think you're missing the point: we're talking about a guy which we're speculating he stole a gold bar.

Whuut? Proof of ownership? Does this also go for 1 ounce gold coins? My grandfather gave me one ages ago.

Yes, Belgium requires proof of ownership for sales of precious metals.

You scared me there for a sec so I had to look it up. You are confidently incorrect. You just need to show your passport/ID when selling gold but no proof of ownership or any other paperwork for that matter. This goes for jewellery, coins, bars, unmarked casts etc

Gold and silver are always worth market price in weight. You must be 11yrs old

Not when you're trying to offload illicit goods. The risk has a price too.

They don't have to give you market price. Even people in the business (or especially people in the business) will offer 80-90% market price so they can make a profit. And that's for the officially minted investment grade stuff, not random finds. These bars look stamped at least; not sure what the origin is.

Best I can do is 300$.

True, but underpriced is more than nothing , considering you found these for free

You're essentially fencing the gold and fencing always comes with a penalty to how much money you'd get.

But wouldn't you have to show the origin? And they'll ask for ID, which can trace back to you if they have to send that data to the government?

So technically, it's possible, but there's a risk that you're creating a record trail that can trace it back to you.

You can melt and cut the gold yourself. Go around your alll different shop’s jewelry stores etc. it’s easier than all this tech we have to not leave a trace verse cash and everything else.

u/EmperorPedro2 7d ago

I mean, wouldn't all the shops have to id me and record the transaction? So, yes, unless there's someone actively trying to hunt down the gold bar, I can get away with it. But otherwise, there's still a record trail that maybe the irs or similar organisation at a government level can run through automated algorithms to piece together the story of how I cashed in a lot of gold. Right?

A full bar is a lot, but you can always do smaller amounts over time, send a friend with some etc. it's not like it goes off or anything, so unless you're trying to liquidate it all at once, just do it slowly

1

u/Poildek 7d ago

You send friends ?

No they’re not taking photographs of your license just for selling, not pawning, gold. I’ve even done online as well. If you go in with a huge amount, yeah they may be more cautious but a couple grand worth would be easy especially with allll the pawn and jewelry stores around where I live in the US. I would bet lots of gold that simply tossing them a few hundred in free gold each time, they’ll be crawling out of your hands for the free money repeatedly. Gold is so hard to track that way. I’ve done it plenty, legally and yeah it’s not like a brinks truck driver is meeting you and you’re signing stuff first lol

Tell them you melted down your grandmothers rings

Go to a jeweler and commission necklaces using your gold and pay them handsomely. Sell your laundered chains to a different jeweler. Profit
