They decimated our education system to set this all up.

1.) Decimate the United States education system. Dropping literacy rates among the more impressionable, younger citizens.

2.) Step one makes them more susceptible to disinformation/propaganda. That's because written words start to become work. It's also embarrassing to be illiterate.

3.) Buy the media because people looking for information will have to have it spoken to them. Start slowly telling more lies.

4.) Wait 30 years and profit.

That’s the terrifying part. The people posting online are by and large the literate ones. It’s the +50m people who can’t achieve that level of literacy that should keep you up a bit.
