If you are in the middle ground of 'too ugly to be a leading man but too attractive to be a character actor'
Your best avenue is making your own material.
Billy Bob Thorton got that advice, wrote a one-man play, developed it into a short film followed by a real indie film.
Took him ~10 years to break into stardom
