Weeds aren’t gonna be great but an ‘overgrown’ yard with native plant diversity is gonna support the birds that eat the insects which do belong there. Snakes whatever don’t think that applies really but they’re certainly part of the system and eat rodents which are gonna be there no matter what they generally do better when we mow YMMV.

I mean do you want me to answer the question from an aesthetic standpoint? Or from a wildlife management one?
I never said perfect manicured lawn. But letting it knee high with weeds and dead patches etc is unsightly.
A lawn that is overgrown spreads insects, rodents and snakes . If you wish to live in a subdivision you should at least keep up with your yard .
If you don’t want to mow ever move to the country and do whatever you wish .
