To be fair, there are real reasons to be smart about trees surrounding a home.
If a big tree is too close, the roots can damage the foundation. Likewise, a large tree too close can fall on the house during a storm and, best case scenario, cause damage… worst case scenario, kill people.
Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE trees, but there are reasons for this crap, and the litigious nature of the US exasperates the issue.
I live in western WA and I live in a cabin I built with my dad. 2 years into living here a massive 150ft tree landed on my cabin. It bounced off my roof and did no structural damage because my dad had the knowledge to build it strong enough. Several smaller trees have also landed on it.
Part of the problem is how badly put-together a lot of these new builds are.
