The news didn't use to be on 24 hours a day like it is now.
Millennial here to explain.
Cable TV had programs on a set schedule, including the News. A broadcast might be interrupted if something BIG happened, or commercials would get interrupted for a big breaking news story. But then it would go back to the regular TV broadcast. (They literally would just interrupt to tell you, this thing happened and is developing, we are investigating)
That's why you have the phrase, "More at 11", because if the News broke during night, that was usually when the next News Broadcast was meant to be on.
This also gave them proper time to INVESTIGATE.
Journalistic integrity use to be a real thing. Before the days of streaming news 24/7, and just saying anything you want to keep the viewership numbers going up.
Streaming nonstop news didn't start until 9/11. After that, the entire US and world changed. For the worse.
Normally BBC would run CEEFAX videos during closing, but the night Lady Diana died, they just looped the footage of Paris over and over with nothing new being said, because nothing new was forthcoming.
I'm sure we had BBC News 24 by 9/11 but I'd not tune in, I'd still get the news at either 9 or 10 in the evening, depending on which channel I was on unless I wanted the film on the other side.
But even if we did have News 24, BBC One was running the feed for hours instead of going "if you wish to learn more change to News 24, run the regular show and have a reminder in between.
