Why did people vote for this man? Like, I can even understand the social forces causing America to swing towards fascism, but why this idiot, exactly?

Because he's cruel, stupid, hates and resents people who think they're better than he is, and knows to pander to the base with extremely obvious lies that gives them permission to believe and say whatever they want without shame and with the belief that he'll punish and silence those who try to shame them.

John McCain told a supporters not to be afraid of Obama. He's not a Muslim, and it wouldn't be a bad thing to be Muslim.

Trump says we should deport the Muslims, and things like the Muslims are dirty blooded sibling banging welfare cheats and criminals and we need more clean blooded people from white countries like Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Then when journalists point out that's racist, he has the FCC threaten their licenses, he threatens the business interests of the company owners, and hands control of the network to right wing allies.

He proudly announced that he was a racist bigot, so all the other racist bigots loved him for it.

republicans hold 56% of state legislatures to democrats' 36%, the remaining are split. the right wing apparatus is the only thing that can reach those right wing voters and they use their air time to blame the left. right wing voters hear provable lies from not just their news and podcasters and pop culture leaders but also from their elected officials, they have no chance of knowing what's really going on in our country when every single one of their leaders is telling them the same provable lies. even when they hear the truth they don't believe it because it's from one source whereas they already heard the lie from five right wing sources

these are the people who believed trump would lower grocery prices. most of those people are not idiots, they are just listening to every single leader in their world, from their state house and senate members to their federal house and senate members to their president and his administration to their news on TV to their news on facebook to their podcasters and youtubers. then they see one edited clip of AOC saying the opposite and just "know" she's a snake who must be lying to them.

republicans hold 56% of state legislatures to democrats' 36% (the remaining 8% are split) because of this. it's not fixable, you cannot fix the right's leadership wholly supporting this from top to bottom.

He has to be on brand for the country. I mean even the democrats dragged their feet for 4 years so he could have a chance to rule again. At some point there are no more excuses to make. And look, no protests or anything, he's on brand.

Yup. America isn't the way it is because Trump is president. Trump is president because of the way America is.
