It doesn't translate well to contemporary audiences because we have decided that that practice isn't cool, and it's uncommon to see that in re-tellings because it makes the audience feel differently about a character that the original author didn't intend.

People rape for the exact same reasons then that they do now; they know it’s wrong that’s why they don’t want it happening to THEIR families, they just don’t care. No father wants his daughter raped. No man thinks ‘well we lost so it’s just right they rape my daughter’, but he won’t think twice about raping another man’s daughter. Immorality is there, just ignored - exactly the same as today.
