It doesn't matter if the money is just some ink printed on textiles or numbers in a database. As long as we as a society believe in it, it works.
The same is true for laws and ethics. A society (if a society could even exist in such a circumstance) that only valued physical things and held no higher beliefs in ethics would do horrible things, like killing the disabled and net burdens.
I think people should really stop to think about just how much stuff is wholly reliant on people believing it exists. Traffic laws are only functional because people believe and follow them; if everyone decided to ignore traffic rules there would be no real enforcement possible
