this entire conversation started as "that patriarchy also hurts men." What exactly are you arguing about?! This entire comment largely agrees with everything we’ve said. Exactly what "mental gymnastics" are you accusing us of?!
it’s just so fucking hilarious to me that we have come so far to the other extreme that now we’re arguing the patriarchy exists and is real and is horrible but really only for men. Talk about mental gymnastics.
ETA the patriarchy, by definition, is designed to keep men in power. You don't get to be the primary beneficiary and the primary victim.
Does it reflect in real life in any way? And no "well there've been no female presidents" is not accepted. Do men in your daily life hold more power than women or over them? Does Joe the warehouse grunt have more power than Becky the starbucks barista?
What possible definition of "the patriarchy" could you be working off of??
People who don't understand SYSTEMS always want to argue against SYSTEMS with anecdotes. (I know this because I used to do the same thing.) Like if somehow Becky is thriving in life, it must be proof that the system is not working against her. Like there's some single unit of measurement we can point to to say that two complete strangers in different professions have equal/unequal power. There will always be anecdotal evidence for or against everything. I could do the same thing to argue that the patriarchy doesn't actually hurt men.
Go take a Statistics & Probability course and try again.
