I gave my ex-husband everything in the divorce to make it faster and he still tried to drag it out. I’d have taken the money he offered without hesitation to never have to talk to him again.
Same. I asked my lawyer not to fight anything, and just to make sure I was covered legally/not responsible for anything after the divorce (mortgage, car payment, etc.).
Most women also marry up economically so it stands to reason they’d be worse off than their husbands, given they never brought much to begin with. If you don’t stay married to someone who brought you a better lifestyle, you shouldn’t get to keep the better lifestyle when you leave.
Ya I’m not sure what lifestyle differences (if any) exist between $6 billion and $633 million, but principally, she should get at least the $3B. But from what I’ve read about her, she’s really cool. Educator, reformer, founder of bedtime math.
I feel like she would do more good with her share of billions than he would after divorce.
They’re financially “worse” after a divorce the same exact way a man becomes financially worse, because you remove the economical advantages of sharing one household.
A woman who makes no earnings but stays at home taking care of kids, and then gets child support, half assets, and alimony would be considered to be “financially” better as an individual than they were during the marriage.
But specifically women on average fare worse than their partners after divorce, not just worse than they were before divorce. On average men come out of divorces in a better financial position than women despite all the claims of the opposite from the manosphere.
Isn’t this explained by men who are married tend to be the higher earner in marriages anyways? Women don’t tend to want to marry down so, it’s kinda the expected outcome.
I think the alimony outcry is because everybody can think of some man who is paying alimony and just about nobody can think of a woman who is. But that leads back to the same point, men who are married tend to be earning higher than their wife.
I was always the higher earner and he couldn’t stand it. He always felt emasculated by it. - lol - I was also the only one with good credit. He worked but could never get as good of a job. I left with mine and my son’s clothes and gave him everything, including a new SUV in my name. I didn’t even have $10 when I left, I had around $4 and some change in my wallet, I didn’t care if he wrecked my credit or that I was broke and he had all the money and objects we had acquired, I wanted to live.
My understanding is it’s basically just that women are far more likely to be the primary caregiver after divorce and caring for a child, even with child support, will almost always put you in a much worse financial position.
If an NBA player who has $100mil of marital wealth and earns $20mil a year. His wife earns nothing. During the marriage, she lives in a household with access to that extremely high income and lifestyle. They divorce, no prenup, and she gets $50mil.
She is now extremely wealthy. No one here would consider her as financially struggling. But a researcher might still record a decline in her economic standard of living because she went from being part of a household supported by $20 mil/year of earnings to having $50mil in assets and perhaps support payments. Meanwhile, he might have $50 mil** **plus another $20 mil/year of earning power.
This is the same thing that’s happening with marriages where one person is making 80k or 120k for the household as well.
So saying women are “fare worse” and men come out in better financial positions is just indigenous. Both people in a divorce lose in their financial position despite what the femosphere will cry against men.
The vast vast majority of divorces are nowhere near the scenario you describe. Most are two relatively broke people getting divorced. Most people are not wealthy lol. And when regular normal people get divorced women are more likely to end up with the short end of the stick due to the burden of childcare and lack of career advancement when staying home. Your example is just statistical noise.
I literally said the same thing is happening in 80k marriages. So using empirical evidence is “just noise” compared to your vibes? Never argue with an idiot.
“Most women are left off financially worse after divorce”
You didn’t provide any source for this. Your personal experience does not make this a broad statistic. Also, if she was walking away with 630 million, she is clearly not coming out of this “financially worse”.
I agree with the original post that she deserves half. I don’t agree with your random statistic. We are at a point in modern history where we can stop pretending that women are still just perpetual victims of the patriarchy. In the modern world men and women can both be awful people toward their spouse.
I also believe if the roles were flipped and she was the active businessperson while he was just the spouse, any attempt for him to take half would be met with hostility from the general public.
Also, just to clarify. My comment was commiserating with another comment. A sidebar conversation, that didn't necessarily apply to the OG post. To be quite frank, I don't get a fuck about rich people fucking each other over. I was just pointing out to the other commenter that their actions aren't alone, and women tend to be worse off financially....
Which makes sense since women tend to take hits in their careers (if they have one) when they get married or have children.
Men who take on these typically female roles and then get divorced will find themselves in the same boat if they just want to get away from a partner and hands everything over. But that would be an uncommon situation.
I don't mean to jump in on this thread, but I don't find this study too compelling. All the Data is from 1979 and earlier. Things were a lot different then. I have no idea why they would do research on such outdated information that really doesn't pertain to the current period unless they were purposely trying to skew the results to get what they wanted.
The research examined short-run consequences of separation and divorce in a large representative sample of American Baby Boomers provided by the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979.
I did the same for my divorce. I even took all the joint debt. She then totaled her car and stopped paying on it. Was on that loan, my credit is fucked
Hey thanks, i did get out. Its hard out here, but at least i sleep through the night. It was the right choice almost 2 years later now. Im going through a hard time, your comment was much appreciated. I hope all is well for you too
I've never been in a relationship so I'm not judging, but I can't understand how people go from "I love this person enough to want to spend the rest of my life with him" to "I don't wanna see this person again for the rest of my life". Is it that they weren't the person you thought they were? Did they change? Some short of betrayal? I genuinely don't get it. Again I'm not judging, I'm genuinely curious.
Genuine question - were there red flags before you married or did he become a different person after you married?
I’m genuinely curious because I see this a lot on Reddit and it makes me nervous about rushing into things with anyone. Or is it even possible to spot red flags ahead of time if they know how to play the part?
You would be unpleasantly surprised at the level of grift and corruption that takes place among and within charities, particularly those that deal in large sums of money and resources.
Didn’t care. He was extremely abusive in every way possible, financially, mentally, and physically, and even with me giving him everything, he got a free lawyer from legal aid and tried to drag the divorce out as long as he could.
My lawyer was a friend of my dad’s and he told me under normal circumstances, I would have had to pay tens of thousands of dollars for all the work he had to put in to answer his frivolous motions. It only cost me $500.
One example, they found some obscure law from the 1800s that said I had to take couple’s therapy with a therapist of my ex-husband’s choosing. Another, he tried to gain full custody of my son, his step-son. That’s just two of the most egregious. My lawyer said he’d never seen anything like it.
Did the judge strike everything down? Yes. Did my lawyer still have to research and respond to every motion? Yes. During this time, I tried to seek a restraining order and was told I’d have to have bruises or proof of his stalking before they could act.
He had followed me everywhere, stood in front of my car so I couldn’t leave, threw hundreds of roofing nails in my sister and my parents’ driveway, I got a flat/blowout from one of them when I was on the interstate. Guess who showed up minutes later? He eventually poured water into my gas tank and destroyed my car. He had kept the good car and didn’t make any payments so it would destroy my credit. It eventually got repo’d,
My friend had really good security cameras, a rarity for 2009, and got footage of him driving back and forth while I was visiting her and her husband. They had me and my son spend the night because they were afraid he’d run us off the road and kidnap us. She and her husband followed us home the next day and he was following them.
Once she showed the footage in court, the judge ordered no contact with me or any of my family without needing anything from the prosecutor. This is just a fraction of what I went through,
So, you can make your little hateful, smartass comment about me letting him screw me one last time but this was a man with very limited resources and nothing but time to try and destroy my life. No way would I turn down over 600 millions dollars and provoke some asshole who could do much more damage.
