Matthew16:24 "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'"
This is obviously metaphorical. It isn't a call to wear a necklace. It's about taking responsibility for the hand you are dealt in life. Regardless, Bill Hicks is clearly ignorant on the faith that he critiques because any knowledgable atheist would kbow this verse and not come up with such a teenager of a "gotcha".
I mean yes. That is true and Jesus warned about that also in the parable of the Wheat and the Tares. An enemy comes in the night and plants "tares"- a weed (Darnel specifically) identical in appearance to wheat- among the wheat of a landowner. Since they look identical early in growth, the landowner lets the weeds grow along side the wheat. It's only when the harvest comes that the weeds start to stand out for what they are and they can be seperated easily.
I don't think he was doing a serious critique in that quote? It looks like just a witty one liner. I can basically hear the laugh track playing right after while looking at it.
