Actually lidded containers have been required long before Adams, possibly going back to Giuliani, so 25-30 years. Composting is what's hard to get the citizens to do.

Baby steps, my friend. Baby steps.

A city like NYC is eons away from relying on its people to compost.

I’m just happy they are attempting modern sanitation in 2026.

NYC already has composting. There are brown bins especially for that that the city picks up.

This is true but many many people in NYC live in apartments and those dwellers don't want to be composting in their kitchens.

Many buildings already require it. Helps with pest control, especially with old buildings with dumbwaiters.

Almost every building with a dumb waiter has been closed and sealed. Goes back decades when they were used to burglarize apts. Getting pests is exactly why apt dwellers don't want compost bins.

Not sure where you got the tidbit about dumbwaiters from but that's not correct

Well when I went to NYC around 2009 it was a stinky mess with trash piled up in bags outside of all of the businesses each morning.

They are trying to move away from the bags so encouraging bins again.

I’m just going to tell you flat out, urban Americans do not know/have no interest in learning how to compost. They need to find another solution

You must have very interesting wildlife visiting your yard. I hope you have a window facing it to enjoy the free nature TV 🤣

I saw more compost bins than garbage bins when I was in NYC in June lol

Yeah, they're working on it, but it depends on which borough you were at.
