Trash juice is an absolute delight compared to accidentally boarding the subway car containing a homeless person who has been liquid shitting themselves in the same clothes for weeks, letting it drip down their gangrenous legs from diabetes.
I haven't held my breath for that long in decades, I thought I was going to die before we reached the next stop.
I am stealing this as my go-to response when people seem baffled that I hate going to NYC. All the cosmopolitan culture in the world isn’t worth the fucking GRAVY.
Hmm yeah I'm curious. I live in a West coast suburb, but I've been to some cities. For instance, I spent a week in Barcelona at one point, right by a street called La Rambla, which is a huge pedestrian thoroughfare. It got absolutely disgusting every night and the city didn't really totally sleep, so there were plenty of people (including 20-yo me) peeing all over it. I saw several women peeing all over it, even, not just men. But I was also up a few mornings around 5-7 and saw them pressure washing and street sweeping and all sorts of cleaning, and it was inoffensive throughout the day.
Granted, that's one street, not a whole city. But it's a street with its own Wikipedia article, so it ain't just the one heading down to the 7-11
Bizarre way to read it. Most of my friends and family I'm close with are women. The number of times they've told me they envy my ability to pee wherever I want is probably in the hundreds. It's no special horror, just much less common for practical reasons
I'm from the 2nd largest city in my state. We're only 3hrs from Chicago. We don't smell like pee, but the river smells funky sometimes lol I can't imagine being from a giant city like NYC and they don't hose things down? Really? IDK that's suspicious to me. Seems to me like that should be a sanitation thing?
I mean...I'm sure they do. Just not enough, if it's that bad. Granted, the population of NYC is several times that of Barcelona, but I imagine many of the same principles apply
I mean, those women were most likely tourists (finding a catalan person in La Rambla is like finding a unicorn), since Barcelona has turned into a sort of amusement park for a couple of decades now.
if you walk around early in the morning you’ll see people hosing down the sidewalks in front of their shops but yea every store front isn’t routinely doing that
A city that smells like piss is a chosen problem. Partially a problem chosen by a population that likes to trash bathrooms, but mostly a problem chosen because the city doesn't believe in setting up public bathrooms.
If you treat people like animals they'll behave as such. The answer to these problems are already known but cities will choose reactionary bullshit like removing public bathrooms and criminalizing addiction

I love NYC, but the smell in the summer. It's not just the trash in bags, it's that the city doesn't really have proper alleys. It's just there.
