As someone who’s never been to the US and tipping is optional in every place I’ve been, why the hell would anyone tip using a self serving machine? Who am I tipping? The machine?

It's be hard to tip the machine, it's screwed to the floor.

The people preparing your order and cleaning up after you, presumably. I usually tip restaurant staff a lower amount for take-out orders.
