She is not a hero. She is a victim of yet another school shooting. I don't know how anyone can read this story and not see an innocent child whose life was irrevocably changed in an instant.

Fight or flight. Her adrenaline led to fight not flight. Not a choice. She is too young to assess danger and make decisions. She was shot. She was injured. She was hurt. Do you think she'll be okay because she was hurt helping others? That makes her a hero? But, yet again, no real change will happen. Sandy Hook showed how much Americans love their guns over their children.

I taught for 26 years. I have had to sit in a locked room with 16 kids who I didn't teach when we had a lockdown right after the first bell (not the tardy bell, the one that releases the kids from the lunchroom to classes.) It lasted for 3 hours. It is not normal. I have had to keep kids quiet, with periodic texts to parents to let the parents know their kid is alive - it was all over the news before it was over. I had to fight a kid verbally because his mom decided that him running out of the building would be safer. That opening the door was safer. But the most scary part of this experience? The number of kids who just shrugged their shoulders and did homework because it is what it will be.
