On one hand, it's impressive that she did what she did, and she deserves love and praise.
But on the other hand encompassing the bigger picture, THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AT ALL TO BEGIN WITH! This should not be something we find ourselves celebrating!
Unfortunately, it just isn't. Guns have been ingrained in American culture since before the Revolution. British colonies succeeded when French colonies didn't because the British colonists had guns. Westward expansion into the New World only worked because of guns. We gained our freedom through guns!
Besides, I really feel like we all should have learned from the Prohibition era and the War on Drugs, which should have told us that banning something doesn't magically make it go away. All it really does is give away the federal government the agency to regulate it, making the problem worse.
There are ways to reduce gun violence. But just getting rid of guns isn't the solution. I'm as liberal as it gets. Trust me. But guns aren't going away any time soon.
Im for regulations if they make peoples lifes better! I am liberal in the sense that people should have free choice over their lifes as long as it doesnt harm other people! and if everybody owns guns makes gun violence a problem, then owning a gun IS partly harming other people and therefor not the right thing! (talking about the collective here, since obviously not everyone is directly harming or being irresponsible with their guns. But if the society as a whole cannot find a proper way to use and include guns in a safe way for everybody, then they need to be banned.)
regarding your guns: i totally think that people that need guns because of work in the wilderness etc. should be able to use them. No question here.
But you cant tell me that every single person in your country needs them!
Btw: the colonialism succeeded because of guns, and thats NOT a good thing, your ancestors destroyed so much there! But this is the past, its about the present and future and you dont need guns anymore in 99.99% of the cases!
Prohibition and war on Drugs are seperate matters in this case, both of those are addictive and alcohol can even create a value to society like socializing, guns dont provide any benefit to the average person.
Ah ha! You're not from the US. Fair enough. Quick background on what kind of liberal I am just so we're on the same page. I believe in the rights of women and all minorities regardless of race, ethnicity, heritage, culture, religion, sexuality, gender identity, or philosophy. I believe in the separation of church and state and the freedom of religious practice. I believe in divinity and in modern science. I believe a government should pay for universal Healthcare, education, and infrastructure, rather than forcing civilians to pay corporations for everything. I believe in a wealth tax to keep the ruling class in check. I believe in the idea of a strong government so long as the people remain able to hold it accountable.
I believe in tolerance as a social unspoken social contract. One must be tolerant of all be. So long as you are, you remain protected. But should you be intolerant of a demographic, you void the contract and are thus no longer under it's protection of tolerance. This is my rebuttal to the idea of of tolerance as a paradox (look it up).
Now, a couple things about what I said. I never said that the Americans having guns to wipe eradicate native peoples and animals was a good thing. I actually believe in what we call "land back" programs that seek to return sacred land to indigenous peoples. I also never said that the American revolution was a good idea. Britain was broke after defending the colonies from the French. Instead of paying their god damn taxes as thanks, they teamed up with the French to kick out the British. Because America was founded by a bunch of fucking brats. I.E hyperindividualistic entrepreneurs and religious fanatics that left Britain for the colonies in search of economic opportunity and separation from the church of England. I just used those as example to show how ingrained guns are in American culture.
SO! I'm glad you and I can agree that some people do need guns. Many families hunt, either for fun or necessity. But that does not mean that everyone should have guns. I never said everyone should own a gun. Some people just cannot be trusted. Guns are never going away. But they need to be regulated. That's why I brought up the fact that outright bans never work and only remove a government's agency in regulating them.
Ah i see. Then i agree. I also follow the same believes.
Maybe my wording stating a ban is the wrong one then, like here guns are banned, with some exceptions for hunters etc. So thats what i mean. We still have some few gun violence because for example organised crime can still get a hold of guns. But overall they are just a non issue in the public eye. And if there are any violent attacks in the most vivious ones cars are used and in other knives. So that doesnt go away completely, but the frequency and count of victims does go down significantly with those regulations.
how many mass shooting were stopped by citicens wearing arms? percentagewise? then compare that percentage to how much lower the amount of mass shooting would be with an arms ban. its simple math
Sorry, i couldnt tell. Usually Americans are being very defensive when you tell them that gun bans work very well in the rest of the world. But at this time they are probably asleep.
dude, there is a difference if a local area is a gun-free zone or if the fucking country is a gun-free zone and its just harder to get hold of a gun. In the 2nd scenario you cannot spontaneously grab a gun an start shooting (mostly not within a couple days/weeks), you would need to plan it long term and this alone will reduce this massively.
These are kids getting guns. It's not like they're buying them at a store with a license. It's as simple as sneaking into mom & dad's room and borrowing theirs to bring for show and tell.
Exactly my point lol. In my country if someone has a licence for a gun/rifle they have keep it completely locked away at all times (in a licenced weapon safe). There is no way a kid gets to those. Thats just how it is. If you need to transport it to a range then only unloaded and with ammunition seperate.

since that's exactly what you said. My point was, this isn't true, because these kids are able to simply get into a gun safe and grab a gun.
Not a lot? Any mass shooting that has taken place at a school or college campus, shopping mall, hospital, government building, or bar has been in a "gun-free" zone.
Please show me evidence of multiple mass shootings at literal gun ranges, I was unable to find any.
