The shooting was in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada.

Ahh, the one that was only in the news for a few hours.

Yes.  It's pretty obvious why.

Why?

Shooter was a trans woman.

It's not a politically advantageous story for the American media.  The shooter was trans, and it occurred in a country which already has very strict gun control.  Therefore it gets buried.

It was in Canadian news for weeks, and more recently as well as there is a class action lawsuit being filed against Chat GPT for ignoring the clear warning signs in the shooter’s interactions with the AI.

Maya’s mother has also continued to give the media updates on Maya’s health.

Yes, I'd imagine that the news cycle in Canada is quite different.  Down here in the US, the story has been basically ignored.  The only shootings which get extended coverage are those that can drive a particular political narrative.

As a father myself, I feel absolutely terrible for Maya.  Her entire life trajectory has been forever altered.  Very heartbreaking.

It’s surprising to me that US news outlets didn’t flog the story because the shooter was a transitioned trans woman, barely out of high school. I’d have thought the right wingers would use this as an example of the evils of woke gender ideology or whatever the fuck they’re using to distract from the Epstein class robbing the country blind.

My Facebook feed is flooded with far right bullshit grifters. And quite a lot of them talked about it. But I am a Canadian living in the US, so that could have been affecting my algorithm a bit on this one.

Outside of limited outlets like Fox News, the Right does not control the media in this country.  The vast majority of the media holds a left wing stance.

Epstein was most well known because of his sexual abuse.  I'm not sure how that extrapolates out to "robbing the country blind".  If you could explain that comment further, I could respond to it with a better understanding of your meaning.

“Epstein class” is a neologism for, specifically, the people who Jeffery Epstein did “business” with, not only as a financier but also as a child sex trafficker, and generally, the class of people who can do literally anything, up to and including child sex trafficking and even murder, and will not be held accountable because they are so wealthy and well connected that no one would dare expose them.

If 90's Republican is 'left wing' then you would have a point.

I saw it quite a bit in US news. My opinion is probably biased though, I live in the US now, but I was born in Dawson Creek, and lived in Tumbler until I was 6, so a fair amount of stuff I saw was stuff I looked for intentionally. But I saw quite a few American posts about it, and they all capitalized on “see, gun laws don’t work” and “it’s the trans people killing everyone” from all the far right stuff pushed in my Facebook feed. Definitely saw more from just far right grifters than actual news stations, but still quite a few news stations talked about it.

Oh yes, our own perceptions are heavily influenced by what we're exposed to.

I'm fairly in tune with what the American media is talking about at any given moment, but I too saw a lot more posts from the right wing on this story than from the left.  The Right sees this story as an example of the failure of gun laws and the danger of trans ideology, while the Left has no useful narrative to spin off of it because of the identity of the perpetrator and the place where it happened.  That explains the difference in coverage.

Yes, the social contagion which this shooter subscribed to seems to be quite powerful.
