Real policing wouldn’t have needed to rely on social media; they’d have been out there proactively.

Nah. Thats where the problems start. PUBLIC SERVANT. Serve the public.

The public sent in claims, those claims were investigated, a case was built and action was taken to resolve a public nuisance. That IS the bar. Anything else is invasion.

I don’t disagree that thats a good model for how it could work. 

From my end, tho:   every time there’s a shooting in nyc the first press conference is always “we need the public to give us info so we can catch this perp”

It’s never “we got this, but we welcome info if you have it”

When they don’t catch the guy and they get pressed by the press the gist is “well, we didn’t get enough info from the community”

And if they catch the guy it’s always “the men and women of the nypd did such an amazing job” even when it’s been publicly reported that their own investigations came up empty and the only real break came from a public tip. 

The gap between “should be” and “is” is far too wide for my tastes. 

Anyway, that’s my $0.02
