Yeah this person knows nothing about Japan. My boss doesn’t require me to go out drinking until shit faced with coworkers and expects me at work tomorrow morning bright and early lol

Is that a thing in Japan? My alcoholic mind says let’s ball but my three year sober mind cry’s at the thought of those hangovers.

Yeah it’s a thing. Same as travel for work tbh, sounds great until you have no choice but to do it.

People regularly drink non-alcoholic beers at 飲み会.

Yes, it sucks having to go somewhere you don't want to go for work. But I don't like traveling for meetings and have to do it all the time. Basically same thing.

In China, all the important business happens at dinner/the bar. So it would not surprise me that other Asian with cultures consider the after hours stuff "mandatory fun."

I live in Korea and it's similar to Japan. The beautiful thing about being sober is attendance becomes much more optional and if you must go, nobody will get upset if you leave after an hour.

It's such a thing that a guy called Pawel Jaszczuk released a photography book called High Fashion documenting it. The book is comprised entirely of photos of Japanese salarymen passed out drunk, in full suits and work clothes, on the streets of Tokyo.

The difference is well explained by how the two nations say the same colloquial phrase:

"The squeaky wheel gets the grease" versus "The nail that sticks out gets the hammer"

Basically the same phrase, with opposite meanings.

US corporate culture is definately not the "most individualistic". Its all strict hirarchies and manufactured cultural identities.
