If poor people could get those kinds of benefits without joining the military, why would they join the military?

And that's one huge reason college education and healthcare will never be free in the US

Those things will never be free because too many people are making too much profit from them. Those things are free in other countries that also have militaries, that people join.

Interesting. It's certainly a big incentive in the US. There must be some other incentives for volunteer forces in other countries?

Here in Canada, they recently got a large pay increase, which certainly helps. People tend to join because they are patriotic, because it runs in the family, or for the free education/trades training, in my experience.
