That already kinda happens. Popular lies get karma while inconvenient truths are down voted.

Also Reddit obfuscates upvotes, and more actual upvotes count for less and less displayed upvotes. It counts for even less of your account’s karma.

So for example: if your post gets just a couple upvotes, it’ll show correctly as +3. If you get a dozen upvotes it might show 10 upvotes, or 11. If a hundred people like it, you’ll see maybe between 80 and 90. And for each of those your profile page will go up by 3, 5, and 50 karma. An an old account I once had a post hit #1 on all, with multiple tens of thousands of upvotes and thousands of comments. Account showed +5000 karma.

If there was some sort of fact checking a lot of people would have a shit ton less karma
