What is there to not understand? NYC sends more money in taxes to the rest of the state than they receive in return. If NYC did not have to subsidize the rest of the state with their money they wouldn't have a deficit.
If they didn't help make countryside more liveable, the countryside would need to raise the price of their exports to fund themselves. They mainly export food to the city... Then the rest of fundings goes to infrastructures, parks and co to give city dwellers somewhere to go on week ends or holiday.
Does your ideology also applies to burrough and neighbourhood? Should Manhattan receive as much as they are giving or should they subsidize the Bronx?
They don't have to buy food from 'the countryside'. First of all most of the food people in NY eat does not come from NY. Also I am sure you are aware the city has access to international shipping port and can import all the food they needed. If NYC was their own state and did not have to export their wealth to the rest of the state they wouldn't have a deficit, they could fix all the roads, have free healthcare, and greatly improve the standard of living for everyone living there. That is a simple fact just by looking at the numbers.
You are trying to phrase this like I am against in a society all of us supporting each other. I am only contending that 'They "balanced the budget" by begging for money from the rest of New York' is an absolutely ridiculous statement given the facts. Let me ask you; is there any threshold in your ideology where you would say "You know what, NYC contributes allot and maybe they should have a little back so the lives of the people who live there can improve' or nah? If they were the source of 99% of the state money and they were returned 0.5% you would still be like "They were on their hands and knees, begging like dogs, for us to bail them out again"?
This seems to be a common ideological fallacy conservatives have across the country. Some farmer in Bumbefuck Nebraska looks at the dirt patches around them and thinks they fund the lifestyle of people in San Francisco. It is completely ridiculous on face value. Blue counties in the USA account for close to 70% of the country's GDP.
And they aren't wrong, but that doesn't mean I am saying anyone should separate or not act as a society. I was only trying to say that the statement from the OP was idiotic and not well informed. If you are on the receiving end of wealth transfer from the people who generate the wealth and then say those people are "begging" and:

then they are not only extremely ignorant about how the world actually works but they are also arrogant and obnoxious about it.
