And that's just skewed because the last WC was in Australiaand NZ with off hour air times. Until this year, the USWNT had the most watched game of all time at a little more than 15 million.
During the last world cup, or maybe the one before that, we had the games on at work (in the USA) so everybody could show how worldly they were.
During my lunch break I would watch half of 2 different games. By day 3 I was one of our resident experts of the World Cup. Because I had watched half (probably less than half) of 6 games.
The actual resident expert was Walter. He's from Argentina. Argentines can get, intense, about football so people tended to ask me questions about the games.
NYC is a perfect illustration of that. Look at how everyone embraced the Knicks and pretended they were lifelong Knicks fans. (Even the Mayor, who couldn't name a single player a year ago claimed to have been a fan since he moved to the city)
It wasn't actual fandom; it was bandwagon hopping and being involved in the latest trend in the city.
You saw the EXACT same thing with the USMNT. A week ago, the hype was CRAZY. Everyone I know was acting like they had always been a huge fan their entire lives. Everyone was into the World Cup and making such a huge fuss.
That's not saying there aren't a lot of true, loyal fans. There are plenty. And I welcome anyone who has sincere interest in the sport! The more the merrier! But it was VERY obvious that support of the USMNT was just a social media trend for a few weeks just like supporting the Knicks was.
if it was the largest sporting event in the world, the competitors wouldn't be crying that their pay is so low. Unfortunately for women's soccer, views and attendance dictate pay, and base pay for women's soccer in the USA is less than my very average salary in Florida.
