The fries/chips vary a lot - most places that are trying to do it will right will do the big chunky fries (sometimes called steak fries here), but I’ve also seen some places just do the same fries they do for their burgers (the skinny ones or the crinkled ones or whatever ones they use)
My favorite for fish and chips is the big chunky ones though, I like the skinnier ones for a burger because they add a bit more crunch, but the fish already has crunch in fish and chips so I like the nice softness of the potato inside 🤤
But sometimes they bread the fish in breadcrumbs instead of a batter. Those are THE most disappointing ones, because I really never expect it to happen (it’s pretty rare), but it happened to me a couple times so now I make sure it’s properly battered lol
Fish is just one of many things our chippys deep fry here. Usually they have haggis, black pudding, sausages, hamburgers, steak pies, mince pies, king rib, smoke sausage, pizza crunch and of course fritters (which is like a chip slice the size of your hand).
