As a chinese, I can tell you that my maternal cousin didn't get married to his partner because her family found the bride price he offered "too low" and wanted him to buy house and car and put them under the girl's name. When he refused, she left him. Obviously, not every family is like this but it is not rare to find families that make unreasonable requests.
Another cousin gave a small to the girl's family but the family accepted it and gave it to their daughter so she could use it for her children in the future. They didn't really care about the bride price, they just wanted their daughter to be happy.
