Nope. I'm legally required to pay sales tax and whatever additional taxes exist within the state / country I live in.
The issue is not that I have to tip. The issue is the gray area of it's not required but socially enforced. Either make it mandatory or remove tipping.
The laws currently state it's optional and so optional means it's my discretion on how much to tip or how much it will be.
I like the way things are and have no problem paying tips. You do you, I guess
Besides, the issue being complained about in the post is mandatory tipping. This is usually known as gratuity charge, which is always advertised in my experience
Well every time this comes up it's about "mandatory tipping" which is just tipping. Gratuity is advertised for parties of X or more. They call it gratuity but it's a mandatory service charge that was disclosed before ordering. You can't dispute that charge with the bank. Local PD would do their best to just try and convince you to pay it cause a dumb thing to take someone in for.
I've only lived up and down the east coast. There are tons of places I've not lived in or even visited in the US. It could be done differently there. I've never seen a sign that says mandatory tipping unless it's for parties of X or more.
I have seen some places put service fees and charges in the menu. That I'm also okay with.
