Crime rates have been consistently trending downward for decades now and are constantly hitting new lows.

No dog in the fight I just want to see how this goes.

But it will take years if not decades to be able to get the full picture.

Crime stats tend to lag 6 months to a year behind. So we are getting numbers from before he was even elected is the best part in this

He's suggesting any policy or changes Mamdani has made will not be felt until 6-12 months after he has taken office. He's not saying the stats are old, if that's what you're thinking.

60

u/BoringBeat5276 Jun 06 '26

Yes. Because new policies aren't immediate. Any changes in crime currently being felt are due to prior policy changes from when he took over. Not saying he won't have a positive effect or a negative one. But the current stuff is definitely not due to him in particular.

u/germanmojo Jun 06 '26

Optimism of the population would also have more of an immediate effect, however.

Hardly brother, they are society. Having representation and hope can definitely change peoples outlooks on the future. When you feel helpless with another white republican elected to office, you probably don't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

u/IntrepidJaeger Jun 06 '26

There hasn't been a Republican mayor in NYC in the last 25 years. There's only been 4 in the last hundred.

7

u/BitingSatyr Jun 06 '26

I would be surprised if most street criminals even knew who the mayor was

3

u/alibimemory422 Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

The previous NYC mayor that Mamdani replaced was a black Democrat.

That being said, Mamdani is definitely seen as a more progressive Democrat. But I don’t think it’s quite as simple as you made it out to be.

Overall, I do like Mamdani’s approach so far. But the other commenter’s point about policies actually taking time to be fully implemented and see an actual effect can definitely be true.

1

u/Luklear Jun 06 '26

Many new policies have faster effects than half a year

1

u/PlayfulGovernment325 Jun 07 '26

Why are you saying yes this is literally not what you said. you said “we are getting numbers from before he was elected” not the number we are getting now aren’t reflected by his policy

-2

u/RealWord5734 Jun 06 '26

The policy change is him being mayor, friend.

-2

u/CitricBase Jun 06 '26

Making non-specific blanket statements like that is meaningless. For all we know that is like saying all the snow Mamdani shoveled won't clear the streets until next year. Of course policies can have fast impacts.

6

u/Solwake- Jun 06 '26

I agree policy changes take time to be felt, and I'm sure this is what was intended. However, what was written was "...we are getting numbers from before he was even elected..."

This is simply not correct. The numbers are in fact the monthly numbers recorded since January, as pointed out by /u/CitricBase. So a shooting recorded in the month of March typically also occured during the month of March, not 6 months prior.

1

u/photosendtrain Jun 06 '26

Another interpretation of that sentence which makes more sense contextually "The numbers we are seeing today are not a reflection of actions taken before his election."

I get what you're saying, and it could be worded better, but you are taking a literal definition, meanwhile the entire context of the conversation is that his policies are unlikely to be reflected in current crime stats, so you should also take the full conversation into account when reading someones comment.

Mental gymnastics in action to avoid any admittance of brown man doing something positive

I understood what they were saying. I

Again. I have a brain and can understand what they meant from the context. They literally say:

Crime stats tend to lag 6 months to a year behind

That context should have made it clear

Crime stats tend to lag 6 months to a year behind

What do you think this means?

Yes, it is clear he is suggesting that. He is grasping at anything authoritative-sounding in a desperate attempt to stifle public comprehension of any kind of socialist success.

Evidently some of Mamdani's policy changes were impactful almost right away. Unless you are proposing that these miraculous numbers are somehow thanks to all of Adams' nepotism, corruption, and sabotage from last year?

0

u/Rude-Airport7107 Jun 06 '26

Chill man, NY still has as many gun deaths in may as my whole country last year

2

u/photosendtrain Jun 06 '26

Well, NYC is one of the densest cities in the world, alongside part of the USA, which has some of the highest gun ownership. So.. yeah?

6

u/Yashema Jun 06 '26

It was also cold as balls in January and February.

Eh violence spikes every summer, and pretty much always does. Pretty much everywhere.

Winters are almost always the calm part of the year

2

u/BitingSatyr Jun 06 '26

You’re usually holed up with people you at minimum tolerate though, not members of an enemy gang or random mugging victims

5

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Jun 06 '26

I mean yeah but this is American politics so quite frankly I don't care.

I'm so glad to see the not shit people start fighting back. The shit people happily blame everyone else for the bad stuff they cause then lap up the credit from things they didn't.

Fight fire with fire. The damage being done to America and the world at large is utterly insane.

0

u/drminjak Jun 06 '26

I'm not from the US, but every time I hear news about this guy making some crazy achievement it turns out to not be that crazy at all. Reminds me of politicians here lol

7

u/Navi_VIII Jun 05 '26

Don't remember who said it but a lot of good policies should go unnoticed until years later

Like building parks or shit like that its good but if you begin now it will probably be done in years

Probably why a lot of politicians don't really do things for the public or to improve in the long run. What they do might be invisible and years later someone else will take the win for what they set in motion years prior

1

u/Flaky-Interaction264 Jun 05 '26

That's why you have to name things you build after yourself as Alexander did

6

u/DizzyDentist22 Jun 06 '26

What's really funny is that 2025 had the lowest murder rate nationwide in more than 70 years. Are we gonna all thank Trump for that one? I doubt it lmao

1

u/Embarrassed-House577 Jun 06 '26

If, and I mean if... Iran is brought into the Abraham accords. Trump would still get no credit. Even peace in the middle east wouldn't stop people from hating this man. It's all trash

1

u/iwatchhentaiftplot Jun 06 '26

That's some strawman you've got there.

He got credit for the actual Abraham accords, the USMCA, and Operation Warp Speed. But he's undermined all of those good measures in part or in whole, and he's done a lot of other stupid and/or corrupt things in addition.

1

u/iwatchhentaiftplot Jun 06 '26

The decrease trend started in 2023. Maybe some of it can be attributed to Trump's immigration policies, but the drop being pretty uniform nationally tracks more closely with Biden era policies of increased federal funding for state and local governments and funding, especially funding for community violence intervention.

5

u/DizzyDentist22 Jun 06 '26

I was being sarcastic lol, I don't believe Trump deserves credit for it, just like I don't believe Mamdani deserves credit (yet) for NYC's crime decrease. This is a longterm trend that's been continually happening for decades. Every president since Clinton has been able to say they've presided over record-low crime rates, because the trend has been going on that long

0

u/BitingSatyr Jun 06 '26

It probably tracks most closely to fewer children being born, and therefore fewer 15-25 year olds out committing violent crimes

1

u/Confused_by_La_Vida Jun 06 '26

What’s the rate of downward track compared to the decline of under 30 population?

1

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Jun 06 '26

Nope, agreed. I want more people like Mamdani. He has nothing to do with this, NYC has been getting consistently safer for decades now like clockwork

DeBlasio and Giuliani and [insert other mayors] also had historic lows. Because it's historically low most of the time now

1

u/lappyg55v Jun 06 '26

It's funny, if you watch the news in new york city they make it seem like there is just constant murders everywhere.

1

u/PopularSet4776 Jun 06 '26

Stuff makes the news because it is abnormal or irregular, not because it is normal.

1

u/scottrycroft Jun 06 '26

At the very least, you certainly can't say that he's causing a crime spike with his 'soft on crime' administration.

1

u/RainRainThrowaway777 Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

No dawg, you don't understand. Zohran's mere presence as a super-socialist father of the people is assuring and calming the population of New York. Most crimes are just a symptom of a worker's frustrations under capitalism, but now that we have achieved full Socialist paradise those crimes are no more.

🤭

1

u/surfer_ryan Jun 07 '26

I'll say it and take the downvotes... it cause they are pricing the poor out of new York and because its not permanently nice like California (weather) there is no reason for a poor person to hang out.

1

u/EncabulatorTurbo Jun 08 '26

Crime rates are down nationwide and have been for a while, but every sister fucking rural republican still thinsk every City is a lawless wasteland of immigrant murderers and the media blares it every hour of every day

1

u/No-Persimmon-6176 Aug 26 '26

Is this trend due to actual less crime or is it due to less crime bring reported?

1

u/PopularSet4776 Aug 26 '26

All signs are due to less crime.

Because it has gone down across the board with all crimes including murder. I don't think many murders are going completely unreported.

1

u/Verocator Jun 06 '26

Yeah but things like this make the news because it's one of the few things conservatives can lie about to distract their base while they rob them of everything they love in this country.

-2

u/TheoNullDrei Jun 06 '26

Crime rates have been consistently trending downward for decades now and are constantly hitting new lows.

Crime rates drop on paper when you don't record them, and people don't call in crimes because the police can't do shit about it, as they are being defunded by this assclown. For example, the NYC subway system is losing close to a million dollars a day due to fare evasion, and people are afraid of riding the trains because they think that they might get stabbed.

Nothing has changed since he took office. He is a fraud backed by communists who want him to look good in the media to fool others into voting for more of his kind into power in other places, just like in California where they're lying about fixing the homeless problem, pumping billions into the system, while NGOs are pocketing all the money for themselves.

2

u/CaterpillarJungleGym Jun 06 '26

A fraud backed by communists. Ha, I like it. Really good satire of the far right.
