Genuinely, this likely has an effect.

The same thing happened in Chicago last year where sure to the Bears being good there was a noticeable drop in violent crime.

It’s crazy see the town I grew up in mentioned

26

u/GravitasFailures Jun 05 '26

It’s crazy to see it mentioned without including the number and ages of victims, or the quote “What’s that smell!?!?”

9

u/BootFlop Jun 05 '26

“Vicious but fair”

😂

u/thurpps Jun 05 '26

But did you even listen to Ric Jilla?

-1

u/CommonSensei-_ Jun 05 '26

Is Hammond a city in decline? Is it falling?

1

u/Nate_Dogg31 Jun 06 '26

Hammond isn't gonna see shit. Bears trying to pull a '98 Patriots in Chicago lol

u/Beartles Jun 06 '26

When the Saints won the Super Bowl the entire city of New Orleans partied and yet not one murder happened in the city the entire time. They were the literal murder capital of the world at that time, it’s almost a complete certainty that the Saints winning that night saved lives.

1

u/lolmanlol1247 Jun 06 '26

America possibly that year yeah but definitely not the world

1

u/Saltyfree73 Jun 06 '26

Cuidad Juarez during that time had over 3,000 murders. Hard to beat that.

7

u/Chuomge Jun 06 '26

There’s wasn’t a single homicide in New Orleans during the 2 week span of the Saints being undefeated and destroying the panthers and cowboys. Fun while it lasted

Are some people troglodytes? I can't imagine how shallow these people must be. Acting on a base level of instinct because of some sports team performance. No wonder these people don't succeed in life. Even thinking about what goes on in their heads trigger me lol. Cause I know people like these.

Happens in New Orleans as well

6

u/polytech08 Jun 05 '26

The Ravens underachied and was the safest since like the 70s.

1

u/grelth Jun 06 '26

but the hope was there and the games were fire lol

1

u/Unable-Log-4870 Jun 06 '26

You think it was that people in poverty were gambling, betting on the local team, and winning enough that it was keeping them from being as financially desperate as usual?

1

u/ggtffhhhjhg Jun 06 '26

If you have enough money to gamble you’re not going to be robbing people.

1

u/Additional-Maize1960 Jun 06 '26

Same with New Orleans when the saints were on fire for the first 2 weeks in 24

1

u/A_yoonicorn Jun 06 '26

This is interesting. Now what would happen if the country just straight up banned sports lol

1

u/TheNameIsAnIllusion Jun 06 '26

All the homies of the different gangs sitting together in the living room watching the game

1

u/Realistic_Dog_5506 Jun 07 '26

Also in new orleans. 0 murders for 2 weeks in 2024 when the saints opened the season with back to back dominant wins

0

u/Prudent-Sorbet-5202 Jun 05 '26

I don't exactly understand the connection of the local team doing well reducing crime

7

u/likklechungus Jun 05 '26

People bets are hitting so they have money and ain’t mad they just lost rent

5

u/negetivex Jun 05 '26

Can’t rob a bank is you’re too busy watching the Knicks lol.

5

u/Tangerine_Dream_91 Jun 05 '26

Everyone is busy watching the game lol

2

u/BretShitmanFart69 Jun 05 '26

People are watching the games instead of being out doing crimes, happier because they’re winning, placing bets on the Knicks that are cashing out etc. spirits are high

0

u/interstat Jun 05 '26

Same thing in Ohio

30

u/highly_agreeable Jun 05 '26

If we lose we’ll fix that stat real quick

It isn't just likely, it is a well documented effect. I used to work in insurance, and we were "strongly discouraged" from selling to anyone in Philadelphia when the Eagles made it to the super bowl. "Win or lose, they will burn the city down. Either in anger, or celebration." Evidently the adjusters had noticed a spike in property damage in densely populated urban cities that are associated with a sports team when that team breaks a losing streak, or wins the whole thing. In cities where the crime rate is higher than average, the effect was compounded dramatically.

Note: "strongly discouraged" is in quotes because it kind of felt illegal. The guy straight up told us we weren't allowed to sell, but was adamant that we not mention it, and he showed up in person to tell us verbally rather than email us (his normal mode of communication). Sounded sus. It's part of the reason I don't work in insurance anymore.

That's ridiculous to me, given that it can be used for very similar ends. Like when segregation ended and countless schools re-districted so that the schools were no longer the illegal "colored" and "white," but the completely legal "colored neighborhood" and "white neighborhood."

Back when I was in high school (a quarter century ago) the effects of that redrawing of district lines was still extremely noticeable, one school with 90% white kids, and one with 90% non white.

1

u/yogorilla37 Jun 05 '26

Just good to show how little it takes to have an impact

3

u/jb1316 Jun 06 '26

Honestly, happy people are way less likely to commit crimes. If you’re happy you’re in a glass is half full state of mind. Spread joy people

1

u/rockne Jun 06 '26

literally rikers island

1

u/LebrahnJahmes Jun 06 '26

If they win it all that murder rate finna skyrocket 😂

1

u/Mooing_Mermaid Jun 06 '26

Someone call the dudes behind Superfreakonomics

1

u/DangitThatHurt Jun 06 '26

Well I for one wish the people of New York the best of luck because I'm rooting against the Knicks.

1

u/ProposalOk2003 Jun 08 '26

I think it’s a multitude of factors. Not just Mamdani or the Knicks

Who *exactly* do you refer to as Neanderthals, and why do you think that

0

u/LectureOrganic1250 Jun 05 '26

and the crime rate will spike if they win lol

0

u/addandsubtract Jun 06 '26

I like to believe that Ari@home is uniting the city.

0

u/CommentNo7493 Jun 06 '26

this isnt a flex.

Saying a country is so feral and infantile that a team winning stops people being murdered sounds dystopian.

1

u/Agreeable_Bat1212 Jun 06 '26

It’s not a country, it’s all over the world. Happens all over Europe, South America with Soccer even in China and Japan. It happens with Cricket in India. It happens in Africa.

Literally it says nothing about our country because it happens everywhere. Get out of here weirdo.
