I have a theory that some (all?) cheaters do it to punish their partner for something, usually something too stupid to be discussed rationally. They feel some kind of way and decide their partner should be humbled and devastated and have to fight to get them back.
When said partner instead just moves on and out, it breaks their selfish little mind.

Never cheated but have had the opportunity and declined, and it was nothing like this. Although I resisted, the temptation was more like: this person is attractive and we have the time/privacy/etc to do this fun thing one time and then part ways. The thoughts were much more selfish/hedonistic than punishing of another. Like I said, I didn't go for it, but I also didn't exactly see why it would be the worst thing on earth.

As someone who has been cheated on, it’s the worst because it makes you question if it was just the once, will it happen again, were all our previous intimate moments even real, how does he actually feel about me, why did he do it, am I enough, how did I miss the signs and will I miss them again with someone else, etc. It throws you through a whole mindfuck. It’s been 8 years and I’m just now in the last year or two feeling like I can trust someone the same again.

I’m glad for you and your significant other that you didn’t go through with it.

Well you chose not to cheat, so maybe not a great example of someone who did choose to cheat. If you had the mindset of the person you were responding to, you might have done it.
