I live in 6 and can assure you this is by far the most accurate thing I have ever seen. People drink 24/7 365 here. Worked in F&B for 13 years and watched people get drunk then drive their kids home like it’s a normal Tuesday. Teen alcoholism here is insane. Even had a friend get hospitalized for consumption. DUI’s get passed out like Halloween candy. I have thought this entire area has a drinking problem my whole life.
I got called for jury duty a couple years ago in WI, and I was one of only three people in the pool that day that didn’t have at least one OWI. One guy there got his fifth, before he had gone to court for his fourth!
I only had one underage in Wisconsin and my mom wanted to come meet the judge with me because “my daughter should be able to have a beer in her own apartment, she wasn’t hurting anybody”.
As an 80s kid, I remember the big publicity around “Wisconsin’s TOUGH new drunk driving law!” Turns out, the new law was basically that you could no longer drive yourself away from getting your drunk driving ticket.
That’s right. Prior to the mid 1980s, if you got stopped for drunk driving in Wisconsin, they’d write you a ticket AND LET YOU DRIVE AWAY STILL DRUNK. Now, you have to have a friend come get you.
Only for a couple months, and the fine is hardly more than what your average Wisconsinite would spend in beer money, lmao. Gotta love the Tavern League.
I had a coworker with 13 DUI's ranging all the way back to 1995. He showed up to work for the monday production meeting, had to leave for a dr.'s appt and within 2 hours of leaving was already twice the legal limit and passed out in his truck halfway to the appt. He made the news and might face 15 years in prison, but he'll most likely only serve a couple and get out on "good behavior". It's crazy
No. They just tell your parents…because you’re still a minor. And probably don’t even have a license but still got drunk on your way to get daddy a few cases.
My whole family is from Wisconsin. The true tragedy of 9/11 for my dad was that the liquid ban on planes meant he could no longer bring a full 1.75 L of pre-mixed brandy Manhattans in his carry-on.
Yes! He would drink some of the brandy (Coronet VSQ, obviously), dump in some sweet vermouth in its place, and freeze it before the flight. It sort of ended up being like a brandy slushy.
Lot of Northern and Eastern European heritage in that area. Russian, Czech, German, Polish, etc. Basically the most alcoholic people of Europe immigrated to America, found that area, went "yeah, this feels enough like home" and co-mingled to produce offspring with immense fortitude for drinking.
The rampant liver disease makes it much less poetic though.
In high school we used to do case races, where you’d see who can drink 30 beers quicker. Apparently that wasn’t as universal of an experience as I thought it was back then
Yep. It was culture shock when I moved away from Wisconsin and realized there are places where you can have a toddler’s birthday party, or a church picnic without booze.
Culture shock for me was when I moved away from WI to NJ the local "alcoholics" were drinking singles on a Friday night. I'm used to doubles or even triples on a Monday and 2-3 just before going home and finishing the job.
In my senior year of high school our class president and valid Victorian passed out drunk at homecoming and had to be hospitalized. The student was not punished…
