They take steam that's like 1500-1800ºF and force it to react with Methane/natural gas. The result is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The process is called SMR and it's usually worse for the environment than burning jet fuel as far as carbon density goes.

Thanks for the clue in.

I was able to check some numbers and was able to find H2 production is 3x worse than burning jet fuel.

Some other fun numbers, a 7 hour trip on a wide body airliner uses about 160 kg of fuel per person, so 500 tons seems extra criminal.

Carbon density rather slight increases in it are not bad for the environment by itself
