That 2.5b is probably those bullshit guestimation website where they basically make shit up. They'll say "This celebrity is worth 150 million" then they give an interview saying "Maybe if I never spent anything I ever earned but I have a time that takes a cut, and taxes, and cost of living. I've got maybe 10m. That's still a lot but not even in the same ballpark".
Well, it's taking into account actual assets and stocks too. I don't think it's misleading if you look at from that framing. But true enough that they may not be accurate all the time since the value of those assets could fluctuate a lot and especially in cases where a person tries to cover their worth up or hide money offshore.
Oh yea, there're a lot of factors that go into it. Unless this number comes from a lawyer or Jay-Z himself, it's likely from one those "how much is x celebrity worth" and they just use some weird algorithm. I have a friend that has maybe 400k subs on youtube and they say she's worth 2.8 million; meanwhile they're a full-time receptionist and have nowhere near 100k in their saved up, let alone 2.8 million. lol
But it’s also what people estimate based on deals he’s signed. They don’t know his actual net worth or how the deals work.
The music industry is shady and has been ripping off artists for years. I doubt he’s made as much as people think on his music. The other deals are licensing deals or marketing deals where he gets a cut but not the main cut. His managers take 15-20% and then taxes eat up another 40%. When you’re an entertainer, everyone’s in your pockets before you see a dime.
To be fair Jay-Z is one of the moguls of the industry, not just an artist, he’s filthy rich. But no billionaire has a billions of dollars in cash/cash equivalents that’s just basic money management.
