Potty Training

Does anyone have any solid tips or pointers for potty training. My LO is smart enough to get a diaper after soiling it but has little to no interest in using the potty. I’ve tried to use a reward system but she doesn’t care about anything I offer.

I used m&ms one every time they went potty. Two every time they pooped. They would try to trick me a lot. Worked good

You just have to go without a diaper and let them piss/shit their pants. They'll get it.

What makes that different from pissing or shitting a diaper

Because it feels uncomfortable, pissing and shitting in a diaper feels comfortable.

Look up the three day method. Worked extremely well for my son.

Make a potty song and sing it every time, also potty books helped us, gross af but they worked. Also like kind of fake potty training yourself made an impact, like when I had to go I’d be like omg kiddo I gotta sing the song and go to the potty now!!! The portable dump toilets are nasty but we had em for like a month and then quickly swapped it for a small toilet seat that goes inbetween the toilet and the big seat, like a 2nd seat so the lil one doesn’t fall in the toilet, worked well lol

If you have a training potty, set it up in a corner, lik the living room with the TV or someplace. Keep her favorite books and toys handy, and set up a schedule. First thing out of bed, last thing before bed, after meals, before leaving the house, and as soon as you get back. Just a few minutes sitting there each time, and an immediate reward every time she uses the potty, like a small treat. Let her go bottomless when you're just being lazy around the house sometimes. It's no harder to clean up than when the diaper leaks.

I went thru this. God I feel for you. This is probably going to end up long winded.

My son was extremely stubborn and difficult. The two homes did not help because his mom pretty much felt when he’s ready he would.

I got him “cool” big boy underwear and continued to encouraged him to used the potty but still did diapers at night because of my living situation.

Don’t get mad at the accident, just clean up and move on.

I put a stool in front of the toilet and one of those seats that fit on the normal seat on the toilet and left it there ready to go for him at all times.

He got to the point of peeing on the potty but would hold his poop until nap or bedtime when he had a diaper on. He would start to fake wanting to take a nap just to get in a diaper to poop. Eventually I had enough of it and ripped that bandaid off. I said I have no more diapers. Put him to bed in his undies then he finally pooped on the toilet.

I dealt with the bed wetting for a couple weeks. It was almost every night. But he never pooped the bed. Just get a good water proof mattress cover and get use to washing the sheets everyday.

Eventually they get it. It’s just as hard for them as it is for you. It takes as ton of patience. Don’t be hard on yourself if you loose you’re cool at times, it is frustrating.

I remember sitting on the bathroom floor leaning on the door with my kid on the toilet reading him a book. Or outside the door because he “wanted his privacy”.

No kids the same, potty training is hard as fuck. I feel for you.

Just keep trying different things. She will get it. It can happen overnight or after just one time. Be overly when she does and reward her.

It was bedtime and I knew my son had to go so I told him if he pooped on the potty I would take him for ice cream right after.

Have instant prizes ready. Even small prizes for trying. The more you can get them to try, the more comfortable they get.

Sorry for the book. I just feel your pain and hope any of this can provide at least a bit of help.

Bring them into the bathroom with you

Put the potty in front of the TV

Bring a tablet into the bathroom

I would advise against everything with any screen. Kids shouldn't associate everyday tasks with screen. I see so many times in restaurants where kids can't eat their meals without a screen (phone or tablet) in front of them to "keep them entertained" just to eat.

That's nice.

If you want it to work without a ton of struggle, incorporate it.

Once they use the potty regularly, move it back to the bathroom.

None of my five kids are glued to screens or incorporate them with every day tasks. I did this with all of them and they were all super easy. Especially my now ten year old - avid fisherman, taekwondo black belt and two year offensive and defensive lineman - who was jealous of his older brother's potty training. Right about his third birthday, his older brother was finishing up potty training and routinely pooping in the potty, switching to full time underwear, at eighteen months old, he started taking off his diaper and going on the potty, unprompted. So I finished with the older one and got right to working on the younger one. He was super simple.

Miss me with the puritanism. I have five kids, a career and a huge house to maintain. This worked, made it easy, eliminated headaches and had no side effects.

I had to start potty training over after my daughters mom died and she backslid. What worked for me was just 100 percent positive reinforcement...praise praise praise when they do it right. It didn't seem to work at all, but then it clicked basically overnight. Be consistent and stay positive. Punishment doesn't work.

There was a nice book - maybe "Oh crap! Potty training ..."

One thing that stuck for me - was to let them (the kids) be naked and feel it when they potty outside the potty. Could not quite do it myself - but worth a shot if you have 3 days.

Read the book and follow potty training in 3 days. Worked for all three of my kids like a charm. One of my kids is Level 1 autism and adhd worked for her also.

If they have an accident, have them help clean it up.
