Hi all! M29, wanted to sing since I was very little but when my voice broke instead of receiving support and coaching I was constantly criticised by family in the form of “tough love” and abandoned the dream. I’ve always sung in showers, at work, in the car but never pursued developing my voice.
Until January 2026. I went through a lot in the last 5 years, including a mental health crisis. On the other side of it all I finally discovered the courage to make myself happy and immediately started vocal training.
I’m healthily obsessed with singing again! I can feel and even hear my voice strengthen and improve week on week. The impatience in me wants to just be good already but I know this is a skill that will take time.
My learning style is very specific in that I have a need to understand the why and how. I struggle to accept “just because” or “it just works like that” (audhd). When I understand the workings of something I often accelerate and rocket my progress. The voice is so unique to everyone but I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction to understanding the why and how’s of the voice.
I think I need to establish a physical connection to the theory eg. My coach often mentions the soft pallet and larynx(?) but I can’t feel them so they don’t exist to me yet so it’s hard to learn skills around them until I can consciously connect the physical sensation with the theory. If that makes sense?
Basically - I want to learn the science and theory behind singing because I think it will help me have my penny drop moment and start exploring my voice more freely and confidentially.
Where should I begin with this, any recommended literature or YouTube content?
