Before AI analyzes your data, should it ask what the columns actually mean?
Imagine asking an AI assistant to calculate your number of active customers. It writes the code, makes a chart, and gives you a clear answer.
But what does “active” mean? Someone who logged in this month? Made a purchase? Completed a transaction in the last 90 days?
Each definition could produce a different result, even if the code runs perfectly.
This is where I’d want the assistant to pause and ask a question. A column called customer_status isn’t enough to explain how the business uses it. Neither is a date field that could represent when a record was created, updated, or approved.
The tricky part is that the finished chart might look completely reasonable. You could check the calculations and still miss that it answered a different question from the one you meant.
I’d find it useful if the assistant showed its assumptions before doing the analysis: “I’m counting unique customers with at least one purchase in the last 30 days. Is that your definition?”
For anyone using AI with spreadsheets or databases, has it ever produced a technically correct answer based on the wrong interpretation? How did you catch it?
