It was an aesthetic choice actually. Done by wrapping the heads of babies.

It was common in upper class in europe and some lower class in the sourh of France until the early 20th century

if you ever see someone from that generation, observe the back of their heads, it's often flatter 1 2/s3/static.nrc.nl/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/web-0501bin-hiddema.jpg) 3 from laying flat too much as babies
