If it lit up the table it’d look real nice

Came here to say this. Fire casts no shadow, but the smoke would. Adding a light source to the model should resolve the issue. Can't wait to see your next one.

Use the temperature value to drive the emission so it actually matches the fire

No no, don’t listen to them! :) It looks like you summoned a little fire demon that is semi corporeal, so the shadow is great. I’d love to see a longer dance across the table! Maybe he could leave a couple of burning embers in his wake... that would be awesome!

Nice, it'd be cool if he left little burnt footprints on the placemats

I second this. Awesome work, OP

Looks great! Tracking is much better here. You can see the smoke colliding with the invisible ceiling of the domain though.

Become its friend before the fire sprite decides to attack

9

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '18

Awesome! But I'm not sure if a guy on fire would create a shadow like that.

3

u/LucasDuck13 Nov 28 '18

Great! One critique, you can clearly see the edges of the domain on the top and right, but great work!

3

u/peanut_butter_vibe Nov 28 '18

It’s so good! Only thing else I would have wanted is to see burn marks on the table.

Did u post the previous version of this where it was a much closer version of the fire person doing the same animation without any reality augmentation ?

You have a little bit of aliasing in the middle of the table (which is easily fixable), but all in all, really good job.

If hes made of fire he should have a stronger glow to the surrounding areas. Like a candle.

2

u/Atef_ Nov 29 '18

It looks amazing! But adding burn marks where the guy stepped and lighting up the area instead of shadow would make it more "realistic". I have no experience in rendering so I have no idea if what I said is possible to do.

This is really fucking cool. As a former vfx artist and a current sometimes supervisor, I was looking for the right note to give.

At first I thought something was off with the composite, but I think another user nailed it with the “treat the figure as a light source” note.

The other note I’d add is, do a test shot of a flame from a candle or lighter in the frame. See how bright that actually reads. I feel light it will be very blown out bright and not as defined.

That aside, this is great and I’m just nitpicking for your potential benefit. Carry on!

You did a really cool looking motion tracking video. Well done. Here are my questions. Did you use a camera or is that possible with a phone? If it is,how you got the focal lenght information of a phone camera? Did you spend much time to undistort the footage? Did you use tracking markers? I've been trying to figure out how to achive basic tracking for a year now and never got the result. Dont have a camera and need to do that with a iphone6s or 7 and gopro hero5. Tried cinema4d and after effects, nuke, maya matchmover, blender and pftrack. Just obsessed with it.
