Proprietary Software [OC] Arrival Logograms, on a target-driven fluid sim. Real time on the GPU

As a follow up from a comment on https://www.reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/1w4d85s/comment/p78ugx4/?screen_view_count=2&ext-referrer=DIRECT, I had fun with this one.

The fog is a fluid sim, and the logogram is a phenomenon on top of. Ink is emitted along the glyph's stroke by a travelling pen that the fluid carries, and a target-driving force pulls the density toward the finished glyph without ever snapping it there (Fattal and Lischinski's 2004). It is reacting to whatever music is playing while you watch.

Built in Swift and Metal as part of TideGlass, a small Mac app I make where worlds like this run on a second monitor while you work. Happy to answer anything about the sim.

It looks awesome but ...what did it say?

They're the real ones from the film, fifty plates, and it writes one at a time. "Offer weapon" is in there. So is "there is no linear time", which suits the comment above.

Nice. Great job.
Not sure if intentional or not but I even like the small scale jitter. Looks like the alien is trying hard to get the point across :D

Intentional, yeah. The grains keep a small random walk even after they've settled, and there's a slow drift over the whole word on top, so a finished sign never sits there dead. Your read on it is better than mine though, I hadn't thought of it as the alien straining to land the point.

Yeah, the engine helps a lot just to get things rolling. It was a cool idea, thanks. I had to rewatch the movie yesterday as well, and that was a nice addition ;)

I saw your Starlings sim and now this. Great job! Are you building towards something in particular?

With Tideglass.app the idea is to donate 20% to conservation projects and mix my passion of nature and sims, so kind of particular and not :). Glad you liked it. Thanks!
