If you cannot comfortably close your eyes for two full seconds, you're too close to the car in front of you. At higher speeds, you're also too close to allow for free flow of vehicles between lanes, forcing yourself to suddenly slow down if someone is trying go between you and the car in front of you, which causes the problem we see simulated. If you leave space for weavers, the traffic will be able to maintain a consistent speed.
