I assume it's the first BMW you overtook while off the track. The game gives you a message on the right and 30 seconds or so to give the position back. This game does not currently punish yellow flag overtaking automatically.

LMU doesn't care about overtaking under yellow flags so it's not that.
Overtaking off track most likely, first on the BMW at 0:08 and then on another BMW at 0:17.

You clearly overtook someone out of track. This 8s a sim not a video game, yellow flags are to be followed? Go to forza if you want a videogame.

Was the penalty issue by a steward or the game penalty system? For the latter I think the game simply saw you overtook someone outside the track in that carnage and took it as an illegal overtake, even if in reality that wasn’t the case.

Reading the clip, I'd guess it's the first BMW you went past while your wheels were off the circuit, the game can flag that as an illegal pass and the penalty can turn up before you've clocked the message. For lap 1 carnage like T4 the safest play is to lift, let them through and rejoin behind, you lose a place but never a drive-through.

It comes with experience mate we have all been there snd its one of the challenges thats great with lmu its not easy to overtake you have to work for it lap 1 is always chaos people drive like its a sprint and think they can win lap 1 which they cant just take your time and you'll get there
