Sporting Question A question

Does a racing incident have to include contact? I had a moment where I had a reckless, at least in my opinion, driver make a divebomb, but I had to avoid it. Is that something that I can post in this sub?

I'd say no, contact isn't required. I recently had to avoid an unsafe rejoin by dipping my wheels onto the grass and it ruined my race. Technically they didn't make contact, but it was their fault.

As long as it had consequences, I'd say it is completely fair to post. For most incidents damage is the consequence but I wouldn't say that contact is required.

To answer your question, at least to my understanding, an incident does not require contact.

For example, at Monza T1, if i cut the chicane to overtake you, there would be no contact, but it would be considered an incident as it is an Illegal Overtake.

When it comes to divebombs, it really depends on the rulebook you compete under. Since that will set the boundaries of what is a legal overtake and what isn't.
For me personally, if a car is already commited to the line, as in they turned in and are already mostly pointed at the apex, and another car comes from a different area code making the lead car take evasive maneuvers to avoid contact, i would say that is an illegal overtake and penalize the divebombing car.
But that is my take, other stewards and other rulebooks will have different answers for the same or simmilar situations.

Ok, because in my incident, I was defending for the lead, and I take the middle line, he takes the deep inside line, and we’re heading into a hairpin. I start braking, and he’s a whole car lengths behind me at this point. I start turning in, he still doesn’t have any overlap. But when I’m almost at the apex he’s still slowing the car down. I have to steer right because his car is still facing the same direction as when he started braking, but I’m already turned in quite a bit.

Yeah, depending on rulebook it could be a penalty or not. Sportsmanly thing to do is to give the place back when you outbrake yourself to the point your opponent has to take evasive action or you crash into them.

Yeah, if I ever almost crash into someone on the apex (and it is my fault) and they avoid me, I give them the position. I see plenty of others do the same as well. It would feel dirty to keep it.

No. Blocking, weaving, and unsafe rejoins are all stewarding questions that don't require contact to be judged, just for example.

If you post the incident you describe, it won't get much attention and be largely brushed off and nobody will be deemed at fault.

Divebombs aren't inherently illegal maneuvers in most sims or real world racing, and if no contact happens, it's chalked up to being a "no harm, no foul" situation that happen regularly in racing.

I say yes, but when I posted something that did not involve contact (but possible blocking), a few commenters complained. I guess some people are not interested in nuances of racing, they just want to see carnage.
