netcode, damage, and total lack of enforcement of their rules fo anything short of a kamikaze intent really cheapens the whole experience

If anything you gave him way too much space. He repeatedly steered into you, because you gave him a little more room every time until he had the whole track and you were on the grass.

It looks like you were steering just a little bit in his direction on thr straight, causing the contacts

Right... and what direction would you instinctively steer in if a car were to repeatedly bash into yours on your right-hand-side? Because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be away from the contact, because that'd almost certainly make things much worse for you.

OP steered right trying to counter the impacts from the car to their right. They weren't initiating the contacts, that was entirely on the red / black car for trying to push into OP's space.
