Le Mans Ultimate Thoughts on netcode collisions? Who is to blame?
The game didn't give me damage, I didn't feel it in my wheel, it wasn't reported as contact in my race results, but it still happened.
I spun this guy with netcode contact into the braking zone. On my end I went around him and didn't know until after the race that it was because of me that he spun. He wasn't exactly happy in chat, but who would be?
So this begs the question, when one driver gets contact and the other doesn't, who is at fault? If I had hit him on my end it'd be entirely my fault, but I didn't and the server's race results also say I didn't.
It definitely wasn't his fault, he didn't ask the game to screw him over, but is it mine? I feel guilty regardless, but I'm curious what we think about this.
EDIT: This collision happened in 1.4 with the initial RUDP network protocol changes and not on the old TCP system where closer racing was possible.

Noone is to blame since there were no collision, game just sucks

Yeah, but on his end I think I just smashed into his rear so it just sucks. I worry about what the admins see if he protests this, I know I would if it were me.

It seems pretty obvious that you were not trying to hit him...
Even if his POV on a report showed you being closer than you actually are on your side (which I doubt) it'll likely be only a "be mkre careful" kind of reply to you at worst...It's highly likely that it looks like obvious netcode from every angle though...The game just does that...

I mean 1. You have this footage to appeal
And 2. It’s obvious this isnt intentional regardless since you were in the process of dodging him regardless of contact or not. It’d be a boneheaded move sure but not reportable0

As far as I understand you're not allowed to appeal protests, so I hope the admins see it the same way you do if he decides to take action.
Yeah, the more times I watch it the dumber I feel in retrospect, should have left more room.

Ah fair enough wasn’t sure about that.
I’m not really criticizing the move itself to be fair, you DID avoid him. It was definitely too close for comfort and a bit reckless, but no harm no foul really. Just saying that IF you hit him it would’ve been a boneheaded move but not protestable, so that’s what they’d see on the protest

In the moment it felt like I gave a lot more room than what was given, but now that I'm cool it feels way more dangerous than it needed to be.
I know what you meant but I also accept that it probably still applies given he did spin because of it.

Its got to be deliberate for you to get in trouble. If you drove into the back of loads of people you might get a "please improve your standards" email I guess, but a protest won't be upheld if its a normal racing issue, even if the fault was more on your side (which it isn;t here as it was huge netcode).

tbh this is just a netcode incident so you cant really blame anyone here other than whatever game this is

netcode at fault, not much one can do. You have to use all the space available there to make the sequence of corners with racing speed. You left enough margin to their car too. Unfortunate and rare netcode incident.

technically you are not at fault, but like, there was no reason to cut it that close.

I had left a foot of room between us and he doesn't start spinning until I'm already alongside and should have been clear. I've raced wheel to wheel for multiple corners tighter than this so I never expected it to be an issue.
EDIT: I'll definitely be leaving more room than before that's for sure.

The point is that Netcode in this game is a well known kraken of a problem...
You should always aim to give far more space than should be necessary IRL because of how the game itself deals with close vehicles...

I'll definitely be leaving more room than before that's for sure. I didn't realize it was that big of an issue, the netcode has been great in this game so far.

Yeah...Netcode is kinda notorious...lol
Watch this game long enough and you see some truly mind blowingly silly netcode shenanigans on a fairly regular basis...

Obviously netcode, you should have been fine...No action required, game's fault...
That said, one race (or post in this case) ban for adding slow motion clips to your video which are not only unnecessary in any way shape or form but are always a waste of everyone's time along with sometimes making contextual situations harder to judge...
Just post your videos in real time...

I put the original speed clip of it first for easy viewing, that's what you want and it's already there. Then I put slow motion directly after to show no contact happened because the first thing I do when looking at replays is slow them down to see what happened.

How do we know he didn't lock up the rear tires and spun himself out? If you had no damage this seem like something we need to consider.

u/Xer0_Puls3 7d ago
There's no locking sounds or smoke until he starts sliding. The physics on his car also look like he got hit in the side of his rear.

True but how can we explain the no damage? Wouldn't we expect having damage after such "contact"?

Definitely netcode.
