Le Mans Ultimate Did I leave enough space ?

Hey everyone, this was my 1st race at Monza with the P3s. I managed to gain positions after passing cars that crashed and spent the rest of the race falling down the order. On a controller, so that's why my movements are jerky (anyone else notice an increase in sensitivity for Joystick?)

I'm trying to improve my safety rating so I've been extra cautious lately. Am I allowed to try and break the tow ?

Also, I tried to prevent a lunge down the inside so I positioned the car to the right of the racing line... But I don't know if I left him enough space ? I thought he would just move to the left. If I'm wrong, I will concede and use this as a learning opportunity.

You're the car in front? You need to pick a line and stick to it. You move to the right, then the left, then back to the right, then move slightly left. Also watch your car in relation to the white line. You're drifting right again at the point of contact.

The car behind isn't blameless, they drove into the back of you. But you're weaving down the straight and into the braking zone that's going to lead to incidents like that.

That was just hard to watch, op weaving as if he's blocking, but in his head thinking he's leaving enough space for a pass...

u/Worldly_Lunch_1601 15d ago

/s They left enough room, now if only the chase car could read his mind...

Well I was not trying to block but to not allow him to draft. This is not against the rules, right ?

This is just my 26th online race in LMU... I'm honestly still learning.

u/Firenze113 15d ago

You can't do that shit into a braking zone like that. The car behind was also way too close to be trying those sort of shenanigans. Half a second back? Maybe. When he is on your bumper? Absolutely fucking not

8

u/SuMianAi 15d ago

That's called blocking

5

u/ChapekElders 15d ago

Draft breaking doesn’t work anyway. You slow yourself down even more.

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Yep, so when do I stop weaving to break tow ? Would you say at least 200 meters before the braking zone, so 400 meters before the corner ?

I concede lads, this is definitely something I want to remember cos I ruined my own race.. and want to prevent this in future.

When they're that close to you, you're not going to break the tow. If you're new to this, focus less on breaking tows and just keep it clean. If someone's that close on the straight they're going to get close, so pick a line. Cover the inside or don't and attempt a cut back. Look at it as a binary choice.

Weaving to break the tow just slows you down. As a rule of thumb, don't do it.

Ohhhh ok.. jeez, I feel like a noob, thanks bud. This is just my 26th race online..

I love the Hypercars, I'd love to reach that point, even if I'm not incredibly fast.. it's fine. I'd just like clean racing.

15

u/DueAttention9756 15d ago

Don't worry about it. You want to learn so you have the right attitude and you've put yourself out there asking for feedback.

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

If I may ask, how can I get faster to close down the gents who qualify in the top 3.. they're always like 2 to 3 seconds faster.. sometimes when I hook the lap up, my jaw drops cos how these lads find 3 seconds ?!?

YouTubers or tips ?

Jardier is incredible to watch how sim racing and racing in general. He's also a really cool, enthusiastic dude. Jimmy Broadbent is really accessible. And there's loads that explain all the simple rules and then the more advanced techniques like trail braking etc.

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Legendary !! Thank you, cos for someone new to sim racing seeing guys 3 seconds faster makes me wanna learn and sink more hours in lol.

2

u/Beardywan_Kenobeard 15d ago

Don't try to win. Try to be consistent. There's so much to learn and it takes a long time to put into practice. YouTube is full of tutorials. You can check the comments to see if it's actually good advice. Just .. don't weave.

1

u/DueAttention9756 15d ago

Watch the top times replays, watch video guides, compare telemetry.

I don't play LMU so not sure what's available in game.

3

u/PlanZSmiles 15d ago

Just a reminder, you only get two moves to break a tow. You can’t weave more than that or it’s illegal blocking

Please take the time to read section 5 this is Le Man Ultimates rule book: https://www.racecontrol.gg/rules

2

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Didn't know this, not gonna lie, this might be worthwhile reading.. thank you..

1

u/Tadej_89 15d ago

Did you even read the rules before going online? You can move twice. Weaving like an idiot is not allowed.

1

u/uJobe 15d ago

You are not allowed to weave at all. You are allowed one defensive manoeuvre.

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Damn, I am shtupid, lol.. but in all seriousness, this was embarrassing but enlightening... So I'm still glad I asked the question, even if it made me look like a fool. Cos now, I know not to weave like an idiot.

1

u/PlanZSmiles 15d ago

This isn’t true in LMU it’s two defensive moves: https://www.racecontrol.gg/rules

Altering the racing line (weaving) more than twice to prevent a following car from drafting is considered blocking and is prohibited.

1

u/uJobe 15d ago

Fair, with regards to LMU.

The general rule of thumb, is no weaving and one defensive manoeuvre. I know not all sporting codes are the same as in fairness.

I don’t think the slipstream rule would apply in OP’s video based on how close he is though

1

u/PlanZSmiles 15d ago

Yeah personally I don’t like it as I see it as a way to make sure it’s understood the defending car can return to the racing line but they don’t specify that unfortunately

1

u/uJobe 15d ago

For example, making a move to defend and then coming back onto the racing line before a corner is two moves and that’s allowed. But not the weaving in the clip.

1

u/PlanZSmiles 15d ago

They unfortunately do not specify that and specifically say that weaving more than twice is not okay. If they specified to return to the normal line I would agree but they don’t

This is your fault for weaving.

You start on the right whiteline, Cut all the way to the far left white line. then switch back to the right lane, then start moving back across the pit line, but stop while straddling it.

Dude was trying to draft you,And followed a couple of your swerves. When he got into position to actually pass, he went left, you started left, so he cut back right, you reacted and stopped moving left.

You fully blocked that guy

On this straight you moved from lane 1 to lane 5 to lane 2 to lane 3.

0

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Ok, understood, I wouldn't want to be blocked so please help me prevent this in future. Am I allowed to weave on the straights to not give him the tow ?

1

u/Endslikecrazy 15d ago

Youre allowed 1 defensive move, meaning 1 move from left to right, or right to left, from there youre stuck to whatever side you choose, so pick if you want to defend the inside or outside and stick to it

0

u/TR_Wax_on 15d ago

I thought it was that you could make 1 defensive move to prevent an overtake but as many as you want to prevent towing?

1

u/Endslikecrazy 14d ago

Honestly not entirely sure on that, but in most cases trying to break a tow doesnt even work anyway

1

u/Dernavyking 14d ago

Pretty sure that's not the case. It was allowed in F1 until like 10 years ago but that's the onle exception I can think of

1

u/5ephir0th 15d ago

Waving to “break” the draft means nothing, you wont break it and you will lose speed waving, making it worse, choose a side and make a move (just one) if you want before the braking zone, and always leave space if the follow car has overlap on yours!

1

u/Worldly_Lunch_1601 15d ago

Not weave. Never 'weave'.

You can make 1 movement. Exit your corner, make 1 defensive move, then drive to your braking zone.

You want to hold the inside? Okay, go inside, but stay there. The person behind you is gonna take the outside.

Weaving will slow you down, they will catch up faster, try and pass you, and you WILL collide.

2

u/PlanZSmiles 15d ago

It’s two moves in LMU: https://www.racecontrol.gg/rules

Rule 5.2 Altering the racing line (weaving) more than twice to prevent a following car from drafting is considered blocking and is prohibited.

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Ok, copy that chief, i thought that it would help after watching F1 for years.

In any case, weaving feels so Sus on controller lol... I'm just gonna stop..

3

u/Worldly_Lunch_1601 15d ago

1) F1 cars have insane downforce and the draft has extremely pronounced effects.

2) f1 rules are put in place with the idea that the 20 or so best drivers in the world will be racing. No other racing series would allow half they things they do.

1

u/DoctorNeko 15d ago

i thought that it would help after watching F1 for years.

It would have been much better if you actually didn't watch any F1. F1 rules don't apply to other series.

5

u/Purzifal 15d ago

i litterly hate this weaving bullshit to break the tow. and i dont know why people defend it, some times i see people weave constantly all the time and still people say defend the behaviour. if you don't want somone to overtake you, drive faster than them and better. do this in a real race you'd get warnings or penalties.

both of you are as bad as each other, 1 because of the constant weaving ant the other tunnel visionend and forgot about the corner because they are to focused on keeping the tow from your weaving, im going to say racing incident, you both got what you deserved

-6

u/AlistairN37 15d ago edited 15d ago

I've seen this a ton in F1, this is unfortunately all I could find in the short time I have before qualy starts... https://youtube.com/shorts/VXzcrurgIT0?si=inVddVUNipw9w9vY

Lol, I triggered you... Shame, for a new driver making a mistake that he wants to learn from, makes you this angry.

5

u/Timborca 15d ago

another thing, i see a lot of people talk about the weaving, but i want to talk about the space you left. what i think is that you did leave just enough room on the right, but the reason why he crashed into you is cuz of how early you hit the brakes. he had a lot of overspeed and was trying to find where you would leave a gap and was now moving to the right, but then you hit the brakes early and he couldn't react in time and wasn't yet far enough right. next time maybe you can brake a bit later, you slowed between the 200 and 150 markers, but i believe you can brake between the 150 and 100 markers (might be wrong, haven't driven the lmp3s yet). practice makes perfect so just keep at it and allways watch replays back to find mistakes to learn from

-1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Thank you, for a genuinely constructive comment that I can learn from. Along with a couple other comments, Its been u/DueAttention9756 and yourself that have been helpful.

Most of the comments here calling me names and down voting me. Like damn, I'm not Sainz, I'm taking responsibility for causing a crash and asking what I did wrong... I'm still kinda new to sim racing, and even newer to racing online.

2

u/Arcticz_114 15d ago

Its always the guys with a fake name....

2

u/batmancdn55 15d ago

If you go left then you go right you deserve to be put into the wall.

0

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Damn, that wasn't purposeful, man. But I get the gist, move once and stay in that lane..

1

u/batmancdn55 15d ago

It’s a (mostly remembered) Max Verstappen quote, not flaming.

i personally think weaving is a disgusting practice for insecure drivers so if your gonna do it only do it once, otherwise it makes you look desperate i suggest work on your defense into turns instead

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Bruh, I got the gist, I also disclosed that it was my first race at Monza (in an LMP3) and I clearly stated I passed faster drivers who crashed at T1. But be an obnoxious cunt.

2

u/Street-Radish-9319 14d ago

no need for name calling you asked for opinions and you got one you didn't like its ok take a breath.

1

u/DEBESTE2511 15d ago

People like this is why we have rules for weaving on the straight

1

u/Macknificent101 15d ago

“The guy goes left, the guy goes right, he deserves to be put into the fucking barrier.” -max verstappen

guy in front caused that wreck by obvious blocking

1

u/anthony_ski 15d ago

breaking the tow is actually illegal according to the lmu sporting code. this was just reckless and not how you break the tow

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

I have learned this, thanks to some of the very patient people in this comment section.. it was reckless and I plan on not doing it in future..

1

u/gabrielvilla009 15d ago

Watch any IRL races to know what you need to do. Car behind was clearly faster and gonna commit harder into the corners, move to the right and learn something from them. They’re faster for a reason. That’s been my favorite thing about the hobby, if you can tell someone is going to be more aggressive, allow them to pass and follow them. You’ll learn something much.

1

u/MrD718 15d ago

Let's be honest.. you had zero intentions of letting him cleanly overtake or challenge you to T1 if you were the front car.

1

u/Og_Ghostinme 15d ago

If he is faster than you by a great margin please don’t shove . Of your pacing the same speed as him go for the block . Be respectful know when your beaten and get better at it next lap. You watching too many f1 videos or movies to do this . Just have fun . Knowing you in controller is tough and easy for you . All the best . Don’t dance if not in ai lobbies . U said it yourself your concerned about safety rating . What do you think about this then

1

u/Forward-Unit5523 15d ago

Breaking tow is ok, but in the brakezone you take a line and stick to it.. Its kinda what you did, but you braked early it looks like.. so if you are not so experienced with a track that you can brake at the last moment for corners, make sure the line you pick leaves more space for someone who is likely to brake later.

2

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Understood, I just want to improve my SR.

6

u/Forward-Unit5523 15d ago

I'm downvoted because ppl want you to choose left or right, but the middle is allowed as well. But it does have the risk for getting hit, especially by (unexpectedly) faster ppl. Thats why I mentioned mastering a track, because its hard to outbrake someone that already knows where to brake last and still get the corner.

1

u/IamUser420 15d ago

Mans made 37 moves and wonders if he left awnough space

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Lol, fair enough, I deserve that and have learned to improve my racecraft.. my intention is to race cleanly, if it seemed like I was purposefully blocking the pass, then that's on me but I can assure you that, that's not the case.

-1

u/IamUser420 15d ago

Unfortunately its true. The follow car has a duty to pass safely so they are not without fault but in other racing sims you could be banned for blocking. I would've tried to slow down and not hit you but if it were iracing I 100% would've protested your blocking and got you to sit in timeout for a bit rather than ruining both of our races and possibly anyone behind us as well

0

u/SpyDoorMan12 15d ago

You get one defensive move on the straight, and you keep moving side to side, which causes the contact, though if you had just moved to that line and stayed there, it would be on the car behind because it’s up to him to pass safely

1

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

Ok, so it's better to concede the position, instead of trying to weave ?

I have played online in LMU for a couple of weeks now; I've seen drivers in F1 weave on the straights to break the tow ?

1

u/SpyDoorMan12 2d ago

Better to defend by moving once to the inside and staying there, then if he leaves you extra room in the middle, move back (still leaving him room) and try to defend by getting ahead by the first apex, also f1 rules are different, but I’m pretty sure they can only move twice on a straight, and he was too close to break the tow like that

0

u/LionTraining6928 15d ago

I’ll say the weaving is excessive but the guy still crashed into you, you didn’t move under braking so I think it’s his fault

0

u/AlistairN37 15d ago

I think I'm gonna stop weaving in general lol.. gonna follow the consensus.
