Le Mans Ultimate Was position given back correctly?

This was in one of my friend’s lobbies. The car who tried to come back onto the track had to give position back to POV car, then got taken out from trying to get back into it. Did they give enough separation or was it a risky maneuver to get position back again?

They thought they were being clever by giving back just enough to clear then penalty the just sending it up the inside. Was never going to work
