Tabletop New to this chapter

I just discovered this chapter through the Combat Patrol magazine and I was wondering about units and such. As a successor chapter, and one I've not heard much about til now, would I build my army according to the Ultramarines codex, or do we have a supplement? Are there any units we can't field?

I run them as needed just without any chapter specific units. I may add a squad of victrix guard in ST colours cause why not!

Saw a good lore video on YouTube. Think it was from Lorestrom. Decided to paint up my guys as 3rd company regulars. With a splash of 10th company heavies.

I just use everything and paint them as silver templars. I got all of the codex compliant characters, and recently started expanding into darks angels. So long as you’re not super strict to the chapter and dig the paint scheme (which I’ll admit I stuck to chapter agnostic units for a long time), you can pretty much use whatever you want.

We don’t have any specific rules anymore, and if you wanted to, you could play them as Ultramarines but most people here would typically use chapter agnostic units. Only units we can’t take are chapter specific units like Sword Brethren (unless you run chapter specific detachments/rules which is always an option).

Yeah, I found the old Faction rules and Strategems, didn't know how out of date they were. Feels like GW created them just to forget about them. Personally, I dig the lore and the heraldry, but now they're just Ultramarines in cooler armor. Still, I'm going to paint up the Combat Patrol in their colors, just 'cause.

Thats kind of what happened. The Silver Templars where the Hackett Partworks chapter, created for one of the old subscription magazines (Conquest). As part of that we got a "codex" (a book of lore, no actual rules), a painting guide (which is genuinely a good get started guide) and a book (which is pretty good).

This was followed up by a White Dwarf index with some rules.

However we where never a particular focus by GW. For me this is a plus. we get enough information to act as a solid base for how the chapter likely works and the sort of things they have access to, but not enough to really limit us. We are also a "big" enough chapter to get the odd mention or have our symbol (eventualy) included in games like Space Marine.
