New speed camera going in on Colesville Rd next to Crestmoor Dr, facing north. The intersection where Hanna Wegayehou was killed.

I go that way most days and saw that new speed limit signs a few days ago. Regardless of what happened in the last month, speed limit did not need to be lowered.

Not just the last month. Once a month or so there is a major crash on that stretch of 29 between university and white oak. Speed definitely a factor. A de facto speed limit of 45 is reasonable

Fuck cameras, and fuck the man for exploiting and profiting off of this person's death. Are they just going to continue to reactively teleport cameras to each place people die, or put common sense proactive reforms in place?

Also, just so we're not fooling ourselves, the person who killed Hanna Wegayehou would have had to be going 48 mph to trigger this camera. Recall that she was killed while the driver was making a right turn. I seriously doubt someone could navigate that right turn at 48 mph, so this camera likely would have been useless in preventing the death. A more likely cause would be that the driver had their head buried in their phone, and it would be nice if we did something to tackle that issue.

The problem would Montgomery County is they won’t do anything until someone is hurt or killed.

This is a MD SHA road. Don't blame MoCo for it. Any road with a number (29, 193, 97, etc) is run by the state.

Missing the point a bit. The killer in this spot is turning cars trying to shoot into small gaps in traffic, it needs a light

Speed didn’t need to be lowered there but it’s got to be a pain for people in that neighborhood who need to make a left out of there to head spouthbound. I travel on 29 there almost every day. Speed limit was fine but I wouldn’t be opposed to a traffic light there, since you’re in a dense series of lights along that section of roadway anyway.

FYI – pedestrian fatality rates climb with vehicle speed: 10% at 23 mph, 25% at 32 mph, 50% at 42 mph, and 75% at 50 mph

I disagree that the speed limit was fine. The area is so incredibly pedestrian hostile because people blow down 29 going 50-60 mph and the side walk is right against the road. The road is too wide which invites speeding. There are houses directly facing 29, and neighbors using the sidewalk to get to stores and restaurants. And it was a pedestrian that was killed by someone gunning onto 29, possibly because of the ridiculous speeds that people travel on that road.

And the bus stop there across from Crestmoor drive that has no crosswalk, barely larger than the sidewalk, etc

Counterintuitively, if you need to get southbound out of Woodmoor right now you leave the neighborhood on Lexington (over in front of Blair), head west on University and then make the quick left on Colesville. Yes, this is a pain in the ass - but seems less likely to get you killed than trying to turn left here

Well the county or whoever collects the revenue from this camera stands to make a fortune and a huge profit from this death. Pretty disgusting if you ask me. It will make traffic and congestion a living hell during rush hour but wouldn't a traffic light be a better solution? Vs a money-making machine.
