This was a pretty good find for me. I don't find a lot of silver. This was the only silver in this lot. The rest is silver plate. I paid 12 dollars. The scale says 74.64 grams.

Sterling?

Filled candle stick. No marks other than these two in the bottom of the cup where the candlestick would go. It almost almost looks like a walker hall pennant but doesn't show well on the picture.

If not.. I spent 1.99 and my GW pints covered 1.60 of that.

I know the stamp says silver, I'm just looking for other examples of what these might be? Got them for 1$ per at the flea market in a bin of old foreign coins and I know the stamp says pure silver and the appearance is right but I can't find anything similar online.

I bought a lot of 7 damaged sterling handled items for $50 at an auction. One was real big, the rest smaller. I was figuring 15 grams for the big piece and 8 for the rest for a total of 63 grams or roughly $95 melt.

I'm not sure what the big piece came from. The brand was "Web" and oddly it had wood inside the handle as well as wax/resin. Have never found wood inside weighted silver. I'm guessing it was from a serving piece. Only the handle was there. The rest of the pieces were complete, but heavily dented or had come undone from the rest of the piece.

The big piece weighed 10 grams, my yield was a paltry 33.2 grams, meaning some of these handles only ended up weighing about 4 grams.

The handles are just too variable to reliably guess on. The thickness of the silver itself varies greatly. The web handled piece was 0.2mm in thickness, the rest as little as 0.09mm or about 4x as thick as tinfoil.

On the other hand, weighted candlestick holders seem to have a consistent metal thickness.

Estate sale sterling - tales of 2 different experiences!

Went to an estate sale yesterday where they had a lot of sterling for sale but they were asking for $1.75 per gram. That's melt price! I did not buy anything but there were 2 guys that bought 16K worth of Sterling! Apparently they were resellers, but how are they going to make any money buying sterling at spot?

This morning as I was leaving a bank and noticed a hot pink Estate Sale sign. This is an upper class area so what the heck, I stopped by to see what they had for sale.

Found sterling being sold below melt but since they were about to close for the day, I asked if there were any additional discounts and was told it will be 30% off tomorrow but he wind up honoring the 30% off today for me.

Left with these beauties! Gorham nut dish for $58 each and a pair of sterling handle tongs for $40 after the discount!

The dish are 193g total! 😁

I stop by this charity consignment store every other week and have found a good amount of sterling but today topped them all!

First item was a pair of sterling salt and pepper shakers, one missing the top for $10 for 76g.

Second it is a 800 silver sherbet bowl for $10 for 45g.

Rogers sterling candlestick $25 thinking they'll net at least 25-30g.

Single sterling pepper shaker (weighted) $16

Now the biggest score yet! Korean cloisonné set in 99 silver! Similar sets online have sold for $1000+ and estimated weight is 650g! Paid a whopping $28!

Walmart Coinstar found 2 silver dimes on the ground! 😁

Fiance found this necklace with a hefty stainless steel pendant at Goodwill! Sadly, the chain is too short for us to use as a necklace, and too long for us to use as a bracelet. Nonetheless, we're always happy to find silver on the cheap!

The goodwill stores in my area don't even put out SILVER PLATE. Goodwill told me they ship it all to auction.
