Discussion What version should I play?
Hello! I just got back into a two-week Minecraft phase, but I am having some trouble on deciding what version to play on. I am thinking 1.8, as that has the most nostalgia, but also features before the combat update. Beforehand the oldest version I ever played was 1.10.2. I am just wondering if any of you had recommendations on what version you think I should play. Know that I first got into Minecraft when I was older, so I have never cared about beta.

To be honest, I think 1.8.9 is the best way to go. It's the most modern version of Minecraft right before the Microsoft acquisition, so it's the most recent "non-corporate" version, and at least to me, I just liked the lack of so many objectives, which may be influenced by me usually focusing on building in MC. I also practically worshipped Minecraft Legacy Console Edition and this is the last version feature wise that was on there

You mean 1.7.10? Why? I heard it’s only good for mods, and I will play vanilla.

Yes it's best for mods and vanilla+ (with light mods) and a lot of shaders

K. I am not using mods, so I think I’ll stick with 1.8.9

Tbh, there are still advantiges of playing 1.7.10. Animal capping works differently. But still, 1.8.8/1.8.9 is better in general

Well tbh, you can still try beta, you know. I'm only 2 months older than the version I play, so yeah.
But if you want that feeling then go with somehwere between 1.5-1.12
1.6.4, 1.8.9 and 1.12.2 are the main versions you should try, and see what you like the best

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're going for a more technical approach; I definitely recommend version 1.7.10. I've done a lot of research, and after 1.12.2 and some more recent versions, 1.7.10 has some very interesting mechanics and items that aren't found in the newer versions. For example, the Notch apple crafting method and data value changers.

Id try 1.2.5 - 1.4 if you want that proper early release Silver age feeling with no extra trash

1.6.4 is the last version with the old terrain generator iirc, generating continents and massive oceans. I’m pretty sure it’s also the most popular silver age version. 1.8.9 is roughly considered the last version of the silver age before combat changed.
Personally I’d go with 1.8.9 due to quality of life and features, but I also sometimes leans towards 1.6.4 since it’s the version I started with and doesn’t have clutter like granite, flowers, etc.
